As a traveler and multilingual teacher, Paul has clocked nearly half his life outside the US. When he was a teenager, he slept on the streetsof London to watch a royal wedding. He took the CIA exam because he wanted to be a spy for the good guys (and not the Good Company). I want children to see that the impossible may in fact be possible, and that children may have more power than they think. This middle school series is set in international locales because travel has made me feel alive and given me an insatiable curiosity to learn.A former middle school teacher, Aertker says he writes for this age group because he relates to it."I act like a child," he says with a laugh. I was looking for a book for my 12 year old daughter who had hit a dry spell with engaging books she was willing to read to the end. A friend recommended this so I bought it. I thought I'd take a peek and see if it might appeal to my daughter before giving it to her. I couldn't put it down.This book is a rip roaring ride through Paris with a truly likable main character and a cast of supporting characters as colorful as a band of Rhald Dahl characters. It's a page turner packed with cliffhangers that keep the pace brisk.My daughter caught me reading it obsessively and giggling at Aertker's comic scenes. I told her what I was reading and why and she immediately demanded I hand over "her" book. She slipped into her room and didn't emerge. I peeked in and asked her if she liked it and she told me she LOVED it. I let her stay up late and pried it out of her hands at 11pm. (Then I finished it!).She read Brainwashed for the next two nights and finished it. She said, and I agreed, that it's the most fun she's had with a book in a loooong time.I was a 4th grade teacher for many years. This novel has an exciting plot, intriguing characters, and short, snappy chapters that speak to the middle grade reader and keep the pages turning. The hero of this novel, Lucas Benes (pronounced like Tennis) lives in a hotel with an international group of rescued homeless children who are being trained by Lucas's adoptive dad to counter the efforts of a powerful international child trafficking organization posing as a legitimate corporation. The story starts when Lucas finds a baby left at the hotel he lives in and this discovery sends Lucas and friends on a mission that never let's up. It's funny, smart, cleverly plotted and has real heart. I think any child from age 9-14 would love this book (and so would their parents). It's good, clean fun and the author make Paris shimmer with life. Enjoy.

My son really loved this book! He couldn't put down, was reading it way past bedtime and even while he was brushing teeth for bed. He can't wait for the next book and wants to order it as soon as it becomes available. Great book for tween or early teen reader, suspenseful reading.

As a 5th grade teacher in Oregon, I have read this book to my students for three years now. The kids learn so much about geography as we pull up many of the real locations of Paris in the book. My students can't get enough of this book and always ask to read the next in the series. Mr. Aertker is also so generous of his time as well, he has done the most amazing skype sessions at the final of our read aloud and he is inspirational in motivating these future authors and leaders in their own writing craft. What an inspirational author and a great read for the TWEEN years. (Although as an adult, I enjoy the books too.).

As a middle school World Geography teacher, I had been looking for the perfect book to introduce to my classes as a book study book. I wanted one that obviously, had a lot of travel and adventure so we could track all the locations, but I also wanted one that would keep my student's interest. I was lucky enough to find THIS book! At first I got 1 copy and did a "test run" with my own kids (who were 10 at the time) and once I got their stamp of approval, I got an entire classroom set! Last year my students loved it and many of them asked about the second book in this series so I knew I had them hooked! We are just starting a new school year and today was our first day jumping into the new book with 120 new 7th graders. Teachers, if you are looking for a book for your classes and parents, if you are looking for a great series to start with your preteens, look no further! You won't be disappointed!!

This was an excellent book, comparable to the likes of Alex Rider and The Hunger Games. The author fully enthrals the reader with a well-written book, satisfying to any spy-novel fan. I would recommend it for ages 10-14. (From a 12 year old in London)

I thoroughly enjoyed Crime Travelers, Brainwashed. I think it should be a part of all school AR reading curricula. I believe tweens and teens will enjoy. I believe parents will enjoy reading this book to their children. Perfectly sized chapters make for quick bedtime reads and also serve as success points for children who have yet to developed a love of reading. It creates a sense of accomplishment. That along with the excitement of the storyline will keep readers looking forward to the next chapter. Great job Paul!

11year old son read the first chapter today and he was immediacy hooked on the story. He couldn't stop telling me about the story. I felt like he talked about the story so long I could have read the first chapter myself in less time.

This has great room for illustration and writing. I only wish every page was the half drawing/half lines, and instead every other page is all lines. My child is 5, so this might be a better fit for a child 8+. I do, however, really like the book.

This is a great book to help encourage the children in your life to write. I’ll continue to purchase this amazing little book for my grandchildren. It will help inspire them and spark their imaginations and inner creativity.

My 8-year old loves to draw, and this journal encourages her to tell stories or to reflect back on an incident.

Completely confounded by the good reviews. Purchased to use with a homeschool Ancient Egyptian unit for my 7 year old. She just finished 2nd grade and will start 3rd grade this fall. This book is so rudimentary with lots of explanations for things that are not important!For example, one activity is to build a horse toy out of clay ~ since the type of toy was popular back then and is still popular today. Another activity is to pretend to be an archaeologist, marking off a spot of dirt in your backyard and then sifting it to see what you find. Archaeologists do not sift through random sites! They study where things might be, look for evidence of settlements, etc. They don't just randomly dig in the backyard.Instead I was looking for an activity book that taught about ANCIENT EGYPT - gods, mythology, feasts, important rulers, art, etc. There are much better resources for activities elsewhere. I highly recommend Evan Moor's Ancient Egypt History Pockets, Great Ancient Egypt Projects You Can Build Yourself by Carmella Van Vleet, Spend the Day in Ancient Egypt: Projects and Activities That Bring the Past to Life by Linda Honan, Metropolitan Museum of Art's Fun with Hieroglyphs, and Ralph Masiello's Ancient Egypt Drawing Book.I would say this is more geared to prek/kinder and maybe 1st grade. My daughter has zero interest in these activities and sees them as too 'little kid'. Recommend previewing it with a library copy before purchasing.

We are going to use this in our homeschool studies. I love that there's plenty hands-on projects (I am not sure we'll be able to do them all!). The information is easy to read and the projects are made of simple inexpensive things.

Absolutely love this book, when I can get it from my kids! Plenty of ideas for hours of fun activities.

great for unit study for elementary kids.

This book will keep a child entertained for days on end. There is a huge wealth of fun and interesting information within, plus great activities. As a children's librarian I was able to plan a whole program around this title complete with activities. Loved it.

This book was purchased to provide my daughter, who teaches in elementary school, a resource for teaching ancient history to children. She tells me the activities are fun, easy to use, and very helpful.

The original edition of the Bismarck "anatomy," by Jack Brower, was a terrible disappointment to me. The drawings were cold and clinical, there were no perspective views, and the level of detail was sorely lacking in places. I ordered this book with some trepidation; I was worried it would simply feature the original Brower plans accompanied by new 3D renderings.I didn't need to worry. Not only is this a completely new book, it blows the previous edition out of the water. Unlike last year's revised Yamato "anatomy," the drawings and 3D artwork were produced concurrently, eliminating that book's odd "Frankenstein" feeling. Although there still isn't much on hull structure and machinery (I'm afraid such information has been lost to time), when dealing with the superstructure, armament, deck fittings, and general arrangements the level of detail is absolutely exquisite. I may not be a card-carrying member of The Cult of Bismarck, but every time I've opened up this book I've gotten lost examining some part of this ship. The plans and models depict details as small as the sacrificial anodes attached to the rudders, the little fold-out boat cradle on the forward-most pair of 15cm turrets, the practice loaders between C and D turrets, and all of the instruments on the front wall of the open bridge on the lower mast deck. It's hard to adequately describe how detailed the illustrations are, so hopefully, the attached pictures will give some idea.The star is definitely Stefan Draminski's extraordinarily complex 40 million+ polygon computer model of the ship. As greatly improved as the line drawings are, they're the main visual improvement over the 2005 edition, and will definitely be a huge help for modelers. Along with overall views of the ship and of the superstructure elements, there are perspective views of individual fittings such as vents, ladders, and fire hydrants, internal views of the main and secondary armaments, and 3D perspectives of each hull and superstructure deck. The textures, colors, and lighting are all very nicely done and give an excellent idea of how the ship would have appeared in its prime.Despite being in service for less than a year, "Bismarck" received a number of alterations, subtle and otherwise, and the illustrations are careful to point them out, whether with side-by-side 3D views or scrap views beside the main plans. The main periods depicted are August 1940, late December 1940 and early 1941, March 1941, and at three points in May 1941. This book avoids some of the pratfalls of the revised "Yamato" anatomy; the 3D views are larger and no longer fall into the gutter and the photographs are now in proper black and white instead of garishly colorized. Plans that occupy two pages now have a slight gap rather than disappearing into the binding.I've purchased almost every book in this series, and although I've only owned it for about a week, this one is definitely in my top five favorites, and is probably the most detailed from an external perspective. The only thing missing that was included in the 2005 edition are a few drawings depicting the structural arrangements of the armored bulkheads. If this edition had included those, along with more drawings of the structure and machinery, I would have awarded it an illusory sixth star...but I guess five will have to do!

This book is exceptional in every way. The detailed, color illustrations are the best I have ever seen in any book. The black-and-white line drawings are very detailed and extensive. Virtually every element of the ship, down to the bollards, is shown in colored illustrations. The interior views of the ship are the best and most elaborate I have ever seen of any ship of any kind. Drawings and diagrams annotate all exterior parts of the ship and many of the interior parts, down to items like horns and loudspeakers. The book also provides comprehensive specifications and dimensions and an excellent historical summary. Finally, the paper is high quality, as is the binding and cover. I cannot believe I obtained this book for less than $200. It cost me $26 on Amazon. I would recommend buying two, in case you lose one!

I have numerous books on the Bismarck!! Stefan Draminski has ,however, done an exceptional book on the Bismarck's technical layout in its 3D illustration!! This book is the epitome of books on Bismarck that illustrates the total ship!! I mean ,to my opinion, the details are breath taking!!! This book will be an instant CLASSIC!!Plus the binding and paper used in this book makes it a treasure that will last for a long time!! A master piece on the subject of the Bismarck!!!

By far the most comprehensive book I have on the construction and build of the Bismarck. I would say this would be an indispensable book for anyone serious in their building of a scale model Bismarck. Only thing I am questioning (so far) is the paint scheme presented in this book, author claims the Bismarck had red turret tops in the Baltic, though other experts have refuted this for some time now.

This book adds to the many resources available to historians, modelers, and those interested in this ship. This is one text in this series that provides almost a complete visual and text inventory of this vessel.

No matter how much I look at this book I discover something new. It has 3d internal views of every deck and a massive amount of detail. I have already pre order my USS Iowa boomer.

This book is the best I have ever seen on the Bismarck. The color is fabulous, as is the detail and breakdown. far exceeded my expectations.

Many prefer Deism, an impersonal force who made the Universe, then left it alone. A relationship does not enter into the equation, nor any concept of love, obedience and humble service to the creator.Christians often forget the depth of God’s love as presented to us in Jesus Christ. He told his Apostles, and tells us today, “That to see me, is to see the Father”. It is a hard reality to grasp. It is for me. All the years as a monk I have struggled with this central mystery of Christ Jesus’s revelation of the Father’s love for each of us. It is because my heart is protected. I fear the pain that love brings, yet I seek to dive more deeply into it. So there is an inner contradiction that I experience that can only be healed by the grace of the Father’s burning love. There is a standing invitation to allow ourselves to be drawn into the eternal dance of the ‘Holy Trinity’, which will never be withdrawn from God’s side.The paradox to this is that in order to fully allow God’s love to embrace me, I have to grow in the understanding of my inner-self and the often not so beautiful aspect of that. I can be fearful, that leads to anger, which at bottom, anxiety is feeding it all. I am 69 years old and at this stage of my life, finally starting to open up and to trust in God love for me. It has taken many self-inflicted wounds, the experiencing of my own self-hatred, and alienation, that has slowly healed me.For in my darkest hour, when filled with my own misery and isolation, the light of God’s love has always broken through. I have accepted the fact that I am pursued by God, and that God will never let me go. Yet I am free and have had to make a choice to trust even when drowning in my own misery. For it is all lies, that I am beyond help, or healing, or mercy. We are all vessels of God’s love and each of us is called to allow Christ Jesus to incarnate in each of us. Our capacity to receive God’s love grows as we continue to grow in love and trust. The soul who trusts in Me allows Me to work freely in her life. The soul who trust Me, by that very fact removes the obstacles of pride and self-determination that impede My freedom of action. There is nothing I will not do for the soul who abandons herself to me in a simple act of trust”.Either ‘fear’ or ‘trust’ is growing in the soul. The more we love, fear will lessen. The opposite is also true. The more we believe ‘fear’, then ‘trust’ will weaken. Fear is a form of self-absorption, trust is letting go of being overly concerned about one’s self and seeking to grow deeper in intimacy with the beloved.As Christian we are called to be lovers, to show forth Christ infinite love for all. When that is forgotten, then fear, and anxiety, and anger will come to the fore. That is how we protect ourselves from others, we place barriers. It is only by the healing of our inner defenses, which we receive through Jesus Christ, that we can let go of fear. It is not something we can do on our own, yet we can make a free choice to trust and in that God’s healing love will flow through us.There is nothing that can stop God loving us, yet we can choose to turn our backs on that reality. Each day is a new beginning. Each moment even. For no matter where we find ourselves, there is always a way out through the merciful love of Christ Jesus. One of the best spiritual books I have read and for the times we live in it should be available in every parish to every Catholic. Renewal through Eucharistic Adoration and reparation. We must spend more time before the Eucharist in silent adoration.

Not just for Priests! This is a beautiful, thought provoking book. This book encouraged me to sign up as a Guardian at Eucharistic Adoration in our Parish. I have reaped many graces from attending Eucharistic Adoration and all thanks to this beautiful book! It truly is Jesus speaking to your heart when you read it!!! Many, many blessings to the Benedictine Monk who wrote it!

Exquisitely beautiful in it's depth and simplicity. As if one were listening in on a heart to heart between Our Lord and a dearly beloved priest, which broadens to include an all encompassing love for every one of us. I wish I could afford to buy a copy for every bishop in the country (indeed the world) to call them back to who and what they are, how necessary their vocation is to the starving laity, and to reinvigorate their priests. Unfortunately, it seems most priests have lost the sense of the Sacred and consequently have lost their true identity and mission as "alter Christi". Perhaps I can purchase a half-dozen and send to my bishop and local pastors. I would encourage others to read it and see if they don't think this would be beneficial to the Church.

It is written by and for priests but the core message of love, affection, tender devotedness of God to you, and the encouragements that are rich in mercy compel you to change your thinking, preferences, and priorities.I have not read any prayer or meditation book as life-changing as this. Praise the Lord!

I recommend this along with "He and I". Together they take you straight into His heart and His desire for all of us.

An un-named Benediction priest writes of Jesus's request for him and every one of us to spend more time with Him in the presence of the Eucharist so that He can pour Himself into our hearts who worship thus. It is very direct, personal and do-able. Christ speaks to your heart directly...! Very moving and highly recommended....!

In “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire,” Pastor Jim Cymbala emphatically makes the case for making prayer a bigger part of every Christian’s life. There are many examples on YouTube, iTunes and elsewhere of the remarkable music made by this choir; but, as the book makes clear, this wonderful music is much less a result of talent and training than it is of the choir’s ongoing commitment to and reliance on prayer.This book contains some amazingly powerful examples of answered prayers. Perhaps the most poignant is the story of Pastor Cymbala’s daughter Chrissy, who rebelled against her earthly and heavenly fathers in her late teens. If there is anything missing from this book, it is explanations of how BT deals with unanswered prayers. I think I know the answer: pray with more focus, pray with more frequency, pray with more intensity, pray with more unity and listen for God’s answer more fervently!

I have wanted to read this book for quite some time. Why? I watched some videos of Jim Cymbala praying with the people at his church, the Brooklyn Tabernacle. What I saw was authenticity. Reading the book did not disappoint. He credits prayer as the key to the “success” of his ministry. This book says a lot about ministry and the need to do it God’s way. Cymbala makes a statement I will quote:"We must face the fact that for our churches and ministries to be all God wants them to be, they must be saturated with prayer. No new revelation or church-growth techniques will change the fact that spiritual power is always linked to communion with God. If you and I are prayerless, if our churches have no appetite for God’s presence, we will never reach our full potential in him."

Such a great reminder. I'm reenergized in my commitment to prayer. Thankful for Pastor Jim's take on this and the stories he shared and the call to pray. It is not really an option. He said something @ one point that really made me think....it was something like "Ok, so heaven is spending eternity in the presence of the Lord. Prayer is spending time in the presence of the Lord. If we're not praying here on earth, why would we ever want to spend forever in heaven?!" I'm paraphrasing but it was a kick in the butt for me. Why do i not prioritize this when it's something so "simple" and yet the only way to really commune with the Father while still in this sinful world. Amen!!

I honestly think the title of this book is cheesy. Will that being said the content (the part that really matters) was amazing! Every pastor, missionary, Sunday school worker, full-time working, "lay" person, and church goer....actually everyone that wonders about Christianity should read this. It is a honest look at the modern Church in America and asks us to examine ourselves (and helps probe) to see whether we are indeed doing what God called us to. It is NOT a hyper - self righteous, liberal, or questionable in doctrine. This guy has very solid doctrine and focus on where the focus should be...in other words the VERY opposite of the Pharisees which "strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel." God bless Jim Cymbala for writing this book!

I like this style of book (self-help as narrated through someone's first-hand experiences) and thought the information in it was really good. That being said, I'm knocking off 2 stars because Jancee Dunn consistently references "research" but does not consistently cite her sources. If she quotes someone from an interview, she's good about giving their name, but there are lots and lots of references to studies and research and there's absolutely no way of knowing which study she's referring to. A lot of what she quotes sounds very interesting and I'd love to read the full study but I can't. In my opinion, it's unacceptable for someone to make money off of the hard work of hundreds of researchers and academics throughout the world and not give credit where credit is due.Overall, I thought this book contains very useful information and am glad I read it, but wish Dunn had credited the people she relied upon to build her case.

This book is full of little gems of advice and insight. From division of labor in the home, raising the kids, organization, money, to sex. I found many of the author's stories relatable and humorous. I think the book, at best, gave me useful strategies I can implement in my own life, and at least, gave me validation that I'm not alone in these struggles. That other good men, good husbands out there still bring these frustrations to their marriages.I think the women who read this book and are left feeling even angrier probably have other underlying problems. Yes, the book does put the bulk of the work needed to make changes on the woman herself, which feels defeating and infuriating. But unless divorce is something you'd seriously consider, what alternative is there? It's hard to carry the burden of having to be the one to "fix" things, be the bigger person in general, and love your husband enough to take that on in spite of all your frustrations. The ones that led to the need for someone to even write this book. But I think she modeled that wonderfully and guess what... it worked for her. Her marriage, her home life, and her job as a parent are all better off. That's worth it.The book helped me understand myself, my husband, and certain dynamics of our marriage and home life. I'd recommend it to any couple about to have a baby or already struggling. Kids change your relationship in so many unpredictable ways. This book helped put it all into perspective and helped me feel more positive overall.

I have rarely laughed out loud while reading a book. And as an avid fiction reader, I didn't know that I could get on board with something more practical. But this book? It's amazing.Helped ground me and realize a) omg I'm not the only one and b) there are genius mechanisms to deal with the stress of having a partner and a baby and thank god now I have them all neatly packaged in a witty book.I've read - and reread - this book now 3 times. Highlighted parts. Flagged others.Sometimes I just turn to it for a chuckle. Sometimes I literally reference it for "how to deal with bringing up...".It's awesome.Can't say enough good things.

This book makes me feel less alone as a mother/wife. I LOVE this book. The title may sound like a negative perspective on husbands, but the actual content of the book is not bashing husbands. It fairly looks at how everyone is responsible for a happy home (still it does address some complaints I and other moms have). It has a feminist/enlightened perspective, but is not heavy handed about it. It has helpful information and good advice/strategies to try and make your post-baby home more harmonious. At the same time, the writer is very humorous and it is very readable! It is, I would say the book is mostly about heterosexual couples, as an FYI.

If this book had a different title, I wouldn’t have to hide it from my partner. Of course, it’s catchy, and many parents can relate. It is heteronormative, as she admits. The actual stories and expert advice in the book are extremely useful, accessible and readable. I highly recommend this book. I don’t hate my husband, but the stress of coparenting is real and it does change the relationship. Why not have help? At the very least it helps me feel like I’m not alone. Other parents have to work hard on their relationships too.

This book was a timely treasure during the early days of welcoming kid #2 this year. It was a poignant reminder that many of the things I feel toward my husband are A) felt by almost all women married to men B) feelings that I don't have to let take over our interactions. I have been a fountain of "how to improve your marriage" tidbits since reading this. And we no longer feel guilty about our 2 1/2 year old feeding the dog. Here's to many more books looking at such practical topics with such gracious humor and honesty. I only wish I had written it!

This book actually really helped me, and my relationship. Not something I can say for pretty much any other book I've ever read. Jancee Dunn did a ton of research (including going to some of the top couples' therapists in the country with her husband) and shares it all. I think that ever single fight my partner and I have had since our child was born was pretty much covered verbatim in this book. So I suddenly felt very much not alone anymore, and also had a roadmap for how to approach our difficulties more gently and effectively. On top of it all, Dunn is a really good, and really funny writer. I looked forward to reading this every day while nursing my child. Definitely a book to own, and refer back to. And pass along to friends. BTW, I shared some of it with my husband, too, who also found it funny, and I think probably helpful. Hopefully the title is not too off-putting in that regard-- it's really useful for happy couples struggling to adjust to the immense change of having a child.
