Folk art, with its simple lines and bold colors is an outstanding source of ideas for needlepoint. This beautifully produced book takes as its sources all kinds of items from the museum, from hooked rugs to weathervanes and delivers them up as lovely needlepoint. The projects are mostly stitched in Basketweave, with commonly available threads such as floss, pearl cotton, and Persian wool. This is fantastic because it makes the projects accessible to stitchers everywhere. The reference section at the back of the book has instructions on making all the stitches and a color conversion chart. The projects, designed by Karyn Gerhard, are divided into five sections: Daily Life, Beasts & Bugs, Flowers, Hearts, and Geometrics. Each section begins with a listing of the projects. The projects each have a picture of the original piece and have the needlepoint photographed in a room setting that showcases more folk art (for even more inspiration). The introduction to each project talks about the project and the other folk art in the setting. Each project also has a material list, information about stiching and finishing it, and some lovely and inventive ideas for variations. That seems like a simple thing, but many books lack it and you can tell from the variations that Ruth and Karyn are needlepointers themselves. The charts are large and in full color with synbols as well, making them easy to read. The color key not only lists the symbols in the chart with the thread and color number, but it also lists how many skeins are needed. If you want to stitch one of the projects in the book, you can take this and buy everything you need all at once. Another useful, but often neglected item. Also in this section is extensive information about the objects used as inspiration, additional information about needlepoint, finishing instructions, and a list of sources. A inspiring book, beautifully produced. I'd love to see more like it.

This is a wonderful book of projects that display folk art designs. The photography is great as are the designs to produce and needlepoint one for yourself.

Its a high quality map, but it only shows major roads. i was hoping it would have more detail on country roads and other side streets.

I am a roadmap collector and recently bought the RandMcNally maps for all 50 states, plus a US Interstate map. I like the large scale used and helps considering my vision is less than ideal. I also use these maps to supplement the official maps that I also have for the entire country

Item was a gift and enabled our son to travel around Illinois visiting relatives and other activities on a recent visit.

Old style map. I like using them.

Fairly good map. Needs to add more county roads.

easy to read

OK Map. One half of the state on one side, half on the other. Not suitable for hanging on a wall - which is what I wanted to do with it. The problem with Amazon sometimes is the descriptions. No where did it say it was two sided or not. And, of course, no pictures of it opened up.

What can I say about a map.....but, it works!!! They are hard to find at gas stations!!!

Check every page of this book as soon as it arrives to make sure it's printed correctly!!!The book is great, but the printing of our copy is horrible! My daughter didn't need it for a few weeks after I bought it, so we didn't even discover the problem until the return window had passed. There are actually MISSING NOTES (and FINGERINGS) on MULTIPLE PAGESâ€”they're literally cut right off!

This is the best scale book for students learning how to play 3 octave scales. Carl Flesch is traditionally the standard scale book for advanced violinists, but this one is better for teaching in my opinion. I also use it to maintain my playing every day as a professional and have found it extremely helpful for the upkeep of my skills.

It seems like a solid scales book. I read a reviews on this and the violin version that said things about it being good for a 2nd year student and that it was the only scale book you would ever need. Those reviews were a bit misleading. Definitely take the "advanced" wording seriously... there isn't a scale in here that is less than 3 octaves and all require extensive shifting knowledge, so no, I wouldn't say second year, and it's quite possible you'll need another scales book in your viola study... perhaps a beginner or intermediate one. :) But that's not anything against this book.... it is called "Scales for Advanced Violists" after all.So, I am well aware this is outside of my ability and needs right now, so I returned it but it has a pleasing set up, is easy to read, is a good quality print and gives plenty of fingering help, even two different patterns for some of the more fingering-intensive scales (chromatic, arpeggios, etc). I'm new at viola but not new at music... it's a good book. I'll come back to it when I'm ready for 3 octave scales.

I like this book (in both the violin and viola editions) for a good, solid source of scales and exercises. It has some great material on double stops in varying intervals, as well, with some exercises I'd never seen before that I've found very useful.

The Vaisesika Sutras are one of the six major dharsanas, or schools, of Indian thought. Surprisingly few books, however, have commented or explained these sutras in an exhaustive manner. Until now. This new book by Subhash Kak is a welcomed addition to Indian scholarship and explains the Vaisesika dharsana in a careful, systematic and enlightening manner. Kakâ€™s commentary is especially important given that the Vaisesika is frequently overlooked in favor of other dharsanas such as Vedanta or Samkhya. Kakâ€™s presentation of the Vaisesika is both exhaustive and enlightening.Kakâ€™s exposition contains an introduction of the Vaisesika dharsana. This summary precedes a translation of the Vaisesika Sutras, with Kakâ€™s commentary on selected sutras. Two essays conclude the commentary.As the title indicates, this book deals with the nature of dharma, physical reality. Most explanations describe the Vaisesika as consisting in the atomistic theory of reality, and stops there. According to Kak, the main components of reality in the Vaisesika dharsana is matter and mind. In the Vaisesika dharsana the prominence of mind is made explicit. While this is a general feature of most dharsanas, in the Vaisesika dharsana goes further to refine this distinction. Indeed, in the nature of things, mind, the Atman, takes precedence to and is the progenitor of the inner substance underlying physical matter.The sutras as explaining that physical reality is the result of a conjunction of mind (purusa) and matter (prakrti). Not content with this statement the Vaisesika goes into some length at how matter evolves afterwards from that conjunction, Kakâ€™s commentary on the sutras adds to the substance of Vaisesika by giving a perspective through modern physics. For example, the Vaisesika predates modern quantum theory and relativistic theory by postulating that reality is to be viewed from the perspective of the observer.This book is both highly recommended because it explores areas not usually followed and presents ancient concepts in a modern light.
