Just finished this book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was like Rick and Jasna were sitting in the cockpit talking to us. I've read every book in the appendix as well as every book they referenced and many more, but I wish this book had been around back before we started our water gypsy life. Not that we would have done anything differently (except maybe avoid the teak decks) but because they write it from the same perspective that we had when we started: not born on boats, not talented boat builders, not seasoned sailing veterans, not rich, just regular people with a will to live a little differently then the masses. And they don't preach that theirs is the only way to do things. Theirs is simply one way to do things and one that they feel is very conducive to the sea gypsy lifestyle. But if you choose to follow a different route, it's fine with them. In "Get Real..." Rick and Jasna hit all the topics without getting hung up in minutiae. It's a great book for solid advice as well as good old fashioned motivation. Bound to get more than a few cubicle-jockeys itching for the open seas and asking themselves, "Why not me too?".
I just finished my second reading of this dandy little book, hard on the heels of my first read-through. It's just what I was looking for, as an inexperienced and impecunious aspiring sailor. The focus on frugality and sustainability rather than consumerism, as well as skill-building and seamanship over complicated gadgetry, is right in line with my own ethos. Having someone experienced help me separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to boat-buying and outfitting is enormously helpful and empowering for a novice like me who has only recently become interested in sailing and cruising. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in cruising or living aboard a boat, especially the overwhelmed novice or anyone interested in sustainability or financial independence.
This book is exactly as the title suggests... REAL, and in his case real means honest, in its love of the sea life and in the perils that life can bring. If you want to get past the fluff and nonsense of "eternal bliss at sea" and into the responsibilities of living at sea, this is a great book to tell you it's a great life if you work at it. After 40 years of sailing, I've found every word herein to be true.
I loved how clearly (and entertainingly) this book was written, very smart and spiritual book that makes a lot of bloody sense.I'm a 25yo competitive dinghy sailor in Australia and give it a 5 star rating not only because I couldn't put this book down but also because a lot of what is explained in the book is Tabu in the sailor's world and would never be addressed in major sailing magazines or websites. It all makes so much sense and I think the attitude and mindset in which Rick and Jasna set sail is the one to have.'Smiles on deck, not miles under the keel' what a great mantra to have.Greatly appreciated read.Alex Zimmermann
There are a lot of books out there on this subject…and if you’re serious, you’ll read a large number of them. However, this book should be your FIRST purchase. Trust me, I’ve read the Hiscock’s, the Pardey’s, Kretschmer, etc., and these are great sources of information. BUT, this book is where you want to start.Why…?? Rick and Jasna (great name) put forth a wonderful overview on the cruising lifestyle and all it has to offer; from thinking about doing it…to dropping anchor in yet another, amazing location. What they don’t do is bore with with the minutiae of each subject. Plenty of time for that later through the other authors mentioned…and more, such as Hal Roth and Peter Bruce. “Get Real, Get Gone†is very informative…and it is entertaining. They DO have a sense of humor.And Tom Cunliffe says, “Don’t even think of buying a boat until you have read this book.†(Don’t know who Tom is…?? You will…)Rick and Jasna, with their very relaxed style, provide you with ample information for you to decide as to whether or not you should begin the process of cruising on a sailboat, with the possibility of becoming...a sea gypsy.
I enjoyed reading this book! Especially resonated with the authors as they shared candid knowledge and insights that are not mainstream. Mutually detesting the every growing greed and frantically marketing that is present in American retail. This book was delicious and I was sad when it came to an end. From the time I started it made me think about what type of sailor am I? I got real in knowing I can scale back to a trailerable sailboat (com-pac 23), using just a few electronics and solar. This book probably has saved me thousands of dollars by challenging me to think beyond the hype. Going with a smaller boat, using an outboard concept will save me coin in the long run. Not having to pay to put in or take out my boat or to store it in a boat yard will save big money. Realizing I can cruise as sea gypsy and it means I spend half a year cruising for same cost of sitting in a marina sipping drinking espresso martinis.
