"Far and Away" is my favorite of Peart's books. The "open letter" format gives him terrific agility between subjects, form, tone, and perspective. There is a careful informality to each piece, as if he is chatting with the reader over a late-night drink, sitting on a terrace overlooking the lights of Southern California. There is intimacy, too, the intimacy of strangers. The emotional timbre of each piece has increased, as opposed to some of his earlier work (even "Ghost Rider") where the subjects where more obviously private - and therefore the reader needed to be kept a little farther away from the author by careful use of grammar and style. For the audience not familiar with Peart's day job, "Far and Away" is a treasure of travel literature, both between geographic locales and between ideas. The casual tone of the work belies its attention to the craft of writing. Much as Rush fans practice playing "YYZ" repeatedly just for the joy of it, Peart practices writing for the pleasure of creating a finely tuned, precise, meaningful phrase. The essays stand on their own, and anyone who appreciates the patient, meticulous, loving effort of good writing will be satisfied - and grateful.

This book is an outstanding work by one of the most creative, introspective minds in the history of modern music. Neil Peart... Drummer extraordinaire, lyricist, author, moto-journalist, socio-environmental psychologist. The style of the book is a collection of shorter chapters, replete with pictures, capturing the time period between the Snakes and Arrows tour, all the way to the recent Time Machine epoch. I recently re-read this book, wanting to relive the magic once again. Thus, the typical Rush/Neil Peart fan will find this work interesting, as will motorcyclists, travelers and anyone seeking a well-written work by a humble, private author. Several things come to mind which have vastly changed from Neil's last work: Pictures...yes, pictures!! Thank you, Mr. Peart. You have endeared the hearts of many motorcyclists around the world who treasure reading of your visits to places that they will never get to ride through. One word of advice, however, is that it would seem satisfactory if you took a few pictures here and there of the scenery and not just your head-inside-the-helmet-next-to-the-scenery. Seems to be a little too much taking one hand off of the bars, while you snap the picture. Just sayin'...The other thing that has changed in the tone of the book is that the mood generally seems light-hearted and happier. The dislike for fan encounter is really absent from this book. After having read all of Neil's books, I know that this is an issue that has just plain worn him out. Frankly, I can't say I blame him. In his own words, he just wants to be "a guy" and certainly not adulated in every public place that he goes. Being followed for miles while on a tour bus is probably not one of his greatest aspirations in life.....nor is being called by a stranger who just left a six-pack outside his hotel room door in the middle of the night. I wouldn't say that Neil is ungrateful - just that he prefers to be a little more "low-key" than Geddy and Alex. I think I would, at that point, too...Even if you weren't a Neil Peart/Rush fan or a motorcyclist, Neil's style as an author is engaging and quite humorous. From the Dizzy Dean quotes, to other "fun facts", Neil is always full of knowledge on different subjects and is quite interesting, causing the reader to lose him/herself in whatever he is describing: wearing full motorcycle gear in all climates, the hummingbird family in his backyard in California, snow-shoeing in Canada, the mysterious cell-phone tower in the distance, etc...The tone in the opening pages of the book is set with Neil declaring that this is a "book of letters, and a serial memoir, and a travel book that includes motorcycling, drumming, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, natural history, human history, birdwatching, hiking, driving, church signs, amateur philosophy and....pretty much everything".Despite the verbal "swats" that Neil takes at religion, the book is packed with adventure of his tours on the road and some not-so-great moments, e.g. hitting the deer on his motorcycle and Neil showing the humanistic side of himself (as any animal-loving human would do). It also offers some very astute advice, coming from someone that should really be a spokesperson for motorcycle safety, having logged as many miles as Neil has: the need to wear full-dress in all weather, in all states. Like Neil, I can't imagine heading out on a bike with head and body exposed, especially at highway speeds. What I really love about this book is not only the fact that it's chock full of great stories involving motorcycling, drumming, Rush and the Neil's private life, away from music; it's the specific captivating style that Neil tends to absorb the reader in, except this time around, the pictures make it so complete. He can easily transition from a motorcycling trip that culminates in a celebration of fine dining, to his project involving the Drum Channel, to writing about marine life, as in "Under The Marine Layer".Perhaps one of the most significant things about "Far and Away" is that Neil is smiling again, at least on the outside. One has to wonder with certain mention in this book, as well as the fast-forward to the sometimes dark themes of "Clockwork Angels" if the smile isn't really a brilliant disguise. Even so, we'll take it for what it's worth.Truth be told, there's a very humorous guy inside Neil Peart who can easily express himself through his pen. In this state and behind the drum kit, Neil is very much in command and at ease. I enjoyed his parody in "Far and Away" of riding in his Aston-Martin DB5 to the lyrics of "Red Barchetta", one of my favorite Rush songs from "Moving Pictures".In the later part of the book, one can also get a sense that a career of constant touring, especially in the early days, have taken their tolls on the three members of Rush, especially as expressed by Neil. One can be quite positive that it is more difficult each time the band tours to go out on the road and do it, no matter the love for the music. In his own words in this book, drumming is a "grim, arduous, sometimes painful job".Sometimes...just sometimes, Neil seems to overstep himself with his opinions on topics such as religion, as he does ever-so-subtly in this book. Interestingly enough, on his own website, Neil proclaims that he doesn't want the "taint" of being a faith-basher, yet he does it with just about every comment he makes in that particular direction.Realistically, regarding the church signs and amateur philosophy that Neil alludes to in the early pages of the book, his own description of his philosophy as being "amateur" about sizes it up when it comes to certain topics. It IS amateur. As far as religion, if Neil could just leave it out of his work, it would probably save him the "taint" he wants to avoid about being a faith-basher. Even so, Neil is not shy about it all, at least in writing. His response to Blaise Pascal's theorem that it is "safer" to believe in God than not, because you have nothing to lose if you're right, and everything to lose if you're wrong was "Man up, Pascal!"... to which I reply, "Man up, Elwood!" As brilliant and interesting as Neil's writing is, he sometimes overextends his opinion as fact, as if he has falsified the non-falsifiable hypothesis and proven that he was descended from an amoeba.... While I didn't openly declare Pascal as being right, I also didn't declare him wrong. Moreover to the point above, Neil preaches (sorry, no pun intended) about tolerance and respect, yet he can only personally agree to the tolerance part of it and not the respect. To quote Neil, "Those who attribute spiritual power to geological formations, a humorless deity, or articles of clothing (think Catholic, Hasidic, Mormon or Buddhist) are difficult to respect - not so much for their magic but for their vanity". To me, that's a fairly blunt remark to make in a book that's pretty much of a different tone... but that's all part of Neil's attempt at "amateur philosophy", as is labeling holy holidays (Christmas, nonetheless, even though he didn't say it openly) as "meaningless rituals and customs"... It's this "blemish" that the author doesn't seem to get that he doesn't have to respect others' traditions, but he also doesn't have to exemplify and bash them in every book. It's also sad from Neil's writing about love and respect as in "The Garden", with respect being somewhat arbitrary on his behalf.Overall, this is a great work - full of great stories inside the mind and life of Neil Peart, who is undeniably a premier icon in the world of drumming, progressive music and modern music...

These are articles all assembled in book form from Neil's website where he does his blog called News, Weather and Sports. The ensemble is nice and it makes for convenient reading rather than sitting on a computer reading them online. I thought one improvement he could make would have been a little additional material or commentary after each article versus what was online. Another improvement could have been some additional pictures. Not just cutting and pasting what was already presented to the reader in digital format.Other than that the writing is always good and he presents his thoughts in an easy to read and entertaining manner. Not something that everyone can do.

A really enjoyable book written by someone who seems to be a really nice guy. Great when you have a half hour or so when you just want to relax with some lovely images and thoughts in your mind. What I would advise against is reading it in January if you own a motorcycle live somewhere like Sweden, because you'll find yourself wandering into the garage on a more regular basis, looking longingly at your pickled motorcycle and wishing the snow would go away. Reading Far and Away is like taking a whiff of cigarette smoke after you've quit smoking for three months. Though, on the upside, it fires the imagination to start planning trips once the bike's back on the road.Loved the book. It drops a star for a number of grammar issues, but they don't really detract from the content.

Another book out together while on your with Rush. The writing is improving, and getting better, but the subject material is well-trodden, consisting of the same sorts of stories and anecdotes as in his past couple of books.I'd love it if eventually we'd get a book with more stories from the many cycling trips he's taken.

I have read 4 of Neil Peart's "travel" books and enjoyed them all. he is intelligent, insightful and has a keen sense of observation. I enjoy reading about his journeys as he tours with Rush.

Being a huge rush and Neil peart fan have seen the boys 28 times his commitment to both his music and his books is one and the same always a great read

Literally. Neil takes us along to some of his favorite places. While it might not win an award, it is Neil. Speaking to us. Taking us on a journey. Giving advice. Always returning and getting to the show on time. Shunpiking. Now you will have to read the book to find out what that means! Fun read. And there is a prize at the end of each ride.

This was a really good book that covers every aspect of male fashion and sartorial taste. There were a few times where I'd be reading and thinking to myself, "I wonder if he covers jeans", "I wonder if he covers shoes", "I wonder if he covers undergarments". Each time I had those thoughts, it was addressed in the next chapter. If I had one suggestion for any future updates to the book, it would be to include pictures (Either in the book or in the downloadable material) of the different fabrics and patterns. While the descriptions were helpful, they all started to run together really quick, so a visual would go a VERY long way there. As someone who strives for a more minimalistic approach to my wardrobe, this book left me feeling like I needed a whole room in my house devoted to all the clothes I should buy. But either way, the book was helpful in helping me identify those core elements I need to be spend good money on, and keep them in my closet. It also opened my eyes to some elements I hadn't thought of before. All in all, a really good book if you are looking to up your game and need a place to start. I can easily see myself going back through this book in order to refresh my memory on its offerings.

I've long followed Antonio on both his YouTube page and website, and as a frequent contributor to the website "The Art of Manliness". Most every time I read his work I take away something, often more than a little thing, that helps me improve my personal style and maintain a realistic self image. We tend to glamorize ourselves, gloss over the need to update and to resist seeing how we've changed or stagnated over the years. Antonio is a clear, humble, personable - and very polite! - guide along the way for those of us who have to learn and unlearn the basics of style and the mechanics of presenting oneself as a polished gentleman. I highly recommend his many "freebie" items, and hope to take his classic and often sold-out personal style course. He presents something for every man and style, and loads of personal tips to improve the "you" you are. You'll not regret buying this book and following Antonio in his many venues.

At a time when rules fly out the window and "good dressing" has been relegated to so-called metrosexuals, Antonio Centano has done men a favor. He has created a comprehensive, well-organized guidebook to wardrobe and clothing essentials. Because of uncertainty and even fear that Gen Y and even X may have in approaching a more formal wardrobe, Centano decodes the appropriate apparel for typical social situations. He addresses the basic "must haves" and even offers cues for those who can't afford to shop GQ's Top 25 Men's Stores, even preparing men to hit the thrifty alternatives, long a stronghold of savvy lady shoppers. If you're ready to put some thought (and some dollars, but not as much as you may think) into your clothing, here's a handy manual that may itself become a classic (last I looked it was already leading its category here on Amazon). The upshot is that you will not only look better but could have an added confidence supportive of your life goals.

This book hits the mark, it gives you a detailed guide for dressing sharp in the modern world. All the information is laid out in an easy to understand way and gives you a step by step guide to dressing well and why dressing well matters in the all too casual world we live in today, where sweats, jeans, tees and running shoes are considered appropriate street wear. If you want/need to dress better this book will help you know what works for your body type, what items are essential for an interchangeable wardrobe and how to choose the clothing for you. I've watched at least 100 of Antonio's videos and read a few of his e-books, this was by far my favorite and I am sure I will continue to reference it for some time to come.

The mark of a great writer is the ability to communicate effectively without drowning the reader in excess verbiage. Mr. Centeno is a great writer. His book is an essential guide to understanding how and why men should pay attention to their appearance. The why part is a useful discussion of the importance of appearance. The how part is the best explanation I have ever seen regarding creating a wardrobe. This is a book which will be used by fathers to teach their sons. Mr. Centeno should be applauded for his efforts to raise the sartorial quotient of America.

To the point, practical, and timeless advice for upgrading your style. There are lots of books that deliver a lot of pretty pictures, but little in terms of practical advice, and others that provide a lot of fashion-talk, but little in terms of how and where to get started. This book finds the happy middle: practical, actionable, and it will make you both look and feel more confident about how you dress. Bonus: check out authors blog and YouTube videos for more great related content.

This review is coming from someone who is NOT an expert and certainly doesn't own the best wardrobe...yet:This book is not too different from Antonio Centeno's "Seven Deadly Sins of Style", just more in-depth, and with better graphics. In general, it's a good "encyclopedia" in that it has a little bit of information on everything (that I know of) related to men's style. Also, rather than reading the book from cover to cover, it's organized in a way that it's best to pick it up, turn to a page that interests you, and start reading. For men who are already experts, this book is probably not for you. But for men who are in the range of "clueless" to "knowledgeable" and looking to improve the way you present yourself, this book has plenty of great information.

This was my first read by this author and it won’t be my last.PNR and RH?? Yes please! In the beginning you get introduced to many characters, you become enthralled in a whole new world. You are kept wondering who you can trust, and who you can’t.In this first book, nothing is as it seems. What you think you knew will be flipped upside down. You will see character growth from beginning to end.I cannot wait to see how Nichole Austin continues to develop all these characters and storylines.

Author Nicole Austin has created this whole world I hapily explored, our heroine is only 17 so she can be a bit bratty however it goes to be with her age. This is a RH with witches, wolves and vampires and despite the assortment of characters this author made it easy to navigate between them, as a reader who enjoys this particular genre, I been dispointed in the past as characters become merged, so here i am recommending this book to anyone who wants to get lost in an adventure.

This is the first book I read by this author, but let me tell you it won’t me my last. The books starts with the main character Rosalyn she’s a young naive 17yr old witch who is not aware of her powers she has and how to control them. In the story you meet a lot of other characters and find out . Who everyone is and what role they play in this book some of the characters I’m not a fan of, others I love so much.Gah the book ends in a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to find out more of this story. They’re were parts where I would get annoyed with the main character but it’s normal because she’s still learning who she is and her finding her role in the pnr land.

This brand new author has found her own unique voice!I'm pretty sure if you're checking out this book you're eitherA. Already a paranormal romance reader orB. Already a reverse harem readerI know I've read both genres, this book combines them and that's not something you see a lot of.This is her first piece of work and she knocks it out of the park!Rosalyn is a seventeen year old princess (typical teenage brat)… she's also a witch coming into her powers. When certain circumstances come to light, her world shifts and the people closet to her reveal secrets that have been buried. Foes turn to friends and strangers to new love interests. This book has everything you could want.. witches, shifters, vampires and mortals. Crazy intense fight scenes and a slow burn that sets fire to the pages!I need book two like I need oxygen! Give it to me now! Yep I'm throwing a Rosalyn tantrum. That ending will blow your mind!Don't miss the stunning beginning to this author's journey!

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. I thought the paranormal aspects of the book was interesting but I got a lot of whiplash with the characters. I really didn’t care much for Rosalyn. I found her to be immature and whiney. I was confused on the love/hate that was going on with all the characters. One minute one of them is in love with her, the next he hates her, then another guy is in love with her but is kissing/marrying someone else and now she has 4 mates? She inturns is connected to another guy, loved another guy and then somehow ends up married to another guy? Totally confused and nothing really made any sense.

DecadenceWitches, werewolves, and vampires oh my!!I’m pretty sure there are not enough words to describe this. This book....... I devoured, became obsessive and NEEDED this book from page one. It captivates your entire being and sucks you in. Plan on reading it in one sitting. You won’t be able to stop. The twists and turns of this book are frustratingly beautiful. I fell in love with Rosalyn’s character and all the struggles and problems she faces. She has so many things going against her you feel so much for her and what she goes through. Her struggles are so much more than the average girl. The men - blew my mind. They are strong, manipulative, mind blowing (literally!), and all around hot, alpha men. They protect, help and inspire her to do and be the best no netter what is happening. This book will leave you with a book hangover for the year. I. Need. More. Now!!! Seriously, go buy this book! You’ll feel the same way I do!!

Wow! Nichole Austin has come out swinging with her debut novel! This book has a very unique, strong storyline that I loved reading. Her characters are interesting and I found myself wanting to know more about each of them and what makes them tick. I don't read a lot of PNR and I found myself loving the quick action of this book. I was left with so many questions and I can't wait for the next books and hopefully will get the answers that are driving me crazy!

My interest was piqued when I read the blurb but after the first chapter, I felt like I was missing paragraphs in each chapter. There was no cohesiveness in the storyline. There was barely a description of the world the book was set in. And the character development was inconsistent. The premise of the story was a good one but the execution of it needed more work.I received this book as an ARC and I voluntarily left an honest review.

Review

Praise For Dad's War Photos:Author and Publisher, Neal Bertrand brings the battles and the people to life in his book. He uses Official Military Records and his father's photographs to tell the story of World War II in the South Pacific. Descriptions of the battles and numerous photographs of planes and natives, involve the reader in the war. A monthly column titled "Elsewhere In The War" describes locations of battles throughout the world, and gives the reader a chance to experience the immense size, destruction and loss of life.Connie Gremillion, whose father was a Major in the South PacificLafayette, LAAuthor of A House for Eliza and Never Say Goodbye  "I am sure the book will bring back many memories for those veterans who are still with us, but perhaps more importantly it will allow the younger generations, especially those whose forefathers served in the Pacific, to see and understand more about the war that encompassed the world."-Ray Bowden, usaaf-noseart.co.uk; Dorset, England "I've never seen a book that covers so much of the war in a pictorial form. It presents a month-by-month account of what it was like to serve in an engineering battalion in support of the fighting troops in the South Pacific."-Hughes Glantzberg, President of the 461st BombardmentGroup (H) Association "This is a fascinating first person view of an enlisted man's perspective. You witness his part of the war through his eyes and camera lens. This is a part ofthe war few have documented so thoroughly from such a unique perspective."-Fred Leger, a life-long student of WWII history; Baton Rouge, LA "I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Neal has done a great job of organizing the book so any reader can get a real taste of where his dad went and what he saw. Curtis Bertrand did just the opposite. Bertrand's war story recounts his journey from Mallet, Louisiana, to the exotic South Pacific in images of life that he saw as part of the 863rd Engineering Aviation Battalion from 1943 to 1945. Bertrand's story is still being told, but this time it is told in a pictorial history book compiled by his son.The photographs, documented by his unit's Official Military Record, provide a compelling story of a young man seeing strange people, exotic lands, death, weapons of war, and the camaraderie of American soldiers. From the Author

PRAISE FOR DAD'S WAR PHOTOS: "I've never seen a book that covers so much of the war in a pictorial form. This book presents a month-by-month account of what it was like to serve in an engineering battalion in support of the fighting troops in the South Pacific. The author has also included official accounts of the activities directly from the battalion history records. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in seeing WWII from a different view." Hughes Glantzberg As a young boy, I often imagined what it was like for my dad to be in the South Pacific during World War II. I had so many questions. What did he do? Where did he go? What was it like being away from home for so long?I grew up looking at his war pictures - there were hundreds of them. Some of them were shocking to me since I was so young. But whenever I asked my dad if I could look at his war pictures he willingly walked to the cedar chest in the hallway of our home and grabbed his three large photo albums. And as a devoted father, he always answered every question I had about them.I loved my dad and we had great times together. But I also have some regrets in regards to the book I would eventually write, like not videotaping his war stories or removing those photos from the album pages they were attached to and reading the captions on the back. Ultimately, those helped me a great deal in producing this title. I appreciate your reading my story, and I encourage you to buy this book for yourself and for your loved ones whose ancestors were in the war. I trust that it will further inform you about this fascinating piece of history.Neal Bertrand, author and publisherCypress Cove PublishingLafayette, Louisiana, USA

I thoroughly enjoyed this book which added depth and imagery to an overlooked but important Pacific campaign. A detailed look at war from the perspective of a simple soldier whose role was to support the ambitious American war machine by building its infrastructure under the most difficult conditions imaginable.

Like FAMILY!

What a fantastic book! It is real first hand primary source history. This is a wonderful tribute of a son for his father, but more than that it is a fitting recognition of the heroes of the greatest generation. This book combines personal photos and stories of Charles Bertrand with the official military record of his unit the 863rd Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Pacific theater. It is well researched and documented, a treasure for any military history buff. What is different about this particular book is that it is not about any specific action against the enemy or singular heroic feats. It follows this unit as it supports the war effort. It shows the aggregate heroic spirit in the actions of all those who served proudly and honorably. Those who are students of the military art will appreciate the contribution made by this man and his unit in bringing about the victory our nation earned in the Pacific. His son has done him proud. Thank you Neal Bertrand for sharing these priceless photographs and this story with us. .

I am so glad that Neal Bertrand took his father's pictures and journals and put together this book. This is a fabulous primary source. As a teacher I am please to have it as a resource, although I am sure I will be accosted by upper grade teachers who teach history for my copy. I believe in sharing. I loved not only the pictures which gave you a first hand look at what was taking place in the Pacific, but also the military journal entries. This gave you a first hand look at what else was going on with him and the other's in his battalion during the month. Another added bonus was the section titled "Elsewhere in the War". This section allowed me to see not only what was happening where he was but also in Japan, Germany and other important places. Every book I've ever read similar to this deals only with what was going on in that particular area. This book give the reader a wider picture of the war. I find this beneficial for students who may use this as one of their primary sources when researching. I would however caution if you are using this as a resource for middle school. Not all middle schoolers are mature enough for some of the pictures. Yes I know that shocks you. There is a picture I found hilarious of a group of men on an outside latrine, naked butts to the camera. Then there are the pics of the half naked women on the planes, or the Philippine women who are naked from the waste up. This is life, but not all middle schoolers are mature enough. I must also caution that some of the pictures are quite graphic of corpses. All in all this is a book that is not just a photo journal, but a wealth of written information as well. I am so happy I had the honor of reading and reviewing this book.

What an interesting piece of history! I was intrigued from the first time I opened this book. Mr. Neal Bertrand has done a great job giving honor and tribute to his father, Charles Bertrand and his service in the 863rd Engineer Aviation Battalion. It is a well researched and documented piece of work that not only highlight's his father's service, but demonstrates the cooperative efforts of the Battalion and it's contribution to the war effort as a whole in the Pacific Theatre. The title of the book is especially fitting. The firsthand photos give an amazing glimpse into a time that truly forged the Greatest Generation of our country. Highly recommended.

I was ten years old and an internee in Old Bilibid Prison in Manila when the battle of Manila took place. The photos and narrative in this book took me back many years when the American Forces liberated our prison and took care of us. The photos and narrative illustrate the massive job both the front line and support troops do in advancing the military against the enemy. The photos also include shots of a "sight -seeing" soldier. This book gives a different take on the war. I especially liked the notes on what was happening elsewhere in the war when the picture was taken.

The book is a very detailed journey of the lesser known Pacific front during World War II. The book is primarily a photolog of the mechanics of war. If you ever wondered how an army can cross oceans and set up bases far from home, this book is for you.

My dad was also stationed on Biak Island during WWII. He was in a different outfit so was not in any pictures in the book, but the pictures and narratives that were in the book gave me a very clear picture what it was like to be on Biak at the time. For anyone who had a family member in the South Pacific during WWII, this book gives you a very good idea of the conditions. I would highly recommend this book.
