If you're thinking of moving to Spain, this should be the first book you pick up. The information is primarily geared toward those moving within Europe, particularly from the UK, with an obvious inclination toward families with children. But there is so much information there that it is still one of the best resources currently available regardless of where you're coming from or with whom you might be traveling. I'd love to see an update of this book expanded to include more information for those coming from outside the EU (the *only* reason I gave it 4/5 stars). It would be quite an undertaking, but would put this book at "definitive guide" status for me.

I own three books on moving to Spain, and I purchased this one last – but I wish I had purchased it first. It gives a really good, basic overview of many of the most challenging issues with moving, and poses some good questions to consider. While the other two books that I have dive into specific topics more thoroughly, it is helpful that this book is easier to read and more focused on the challenges that parents specifically face with such a move. The author shares some of her family's personal experiences, which are often quite entertaining, and has a lot of supplementary material on her website, Facebook, etc.I recommend this book as an excellent, readable starting point to understanding a move to Spain overall, and to get you thinking about what you will need to dive into more thoroughly.

My husband and I are just getting underway planning a one year move to Spain with our two boys, who will be 9 and 13 when we take off. Lisa's book has provided a superb outline of tasks and considerations large and small, only some of which had I fully thought through in advance of this read. Out situation being only a temporary move, Moving to Spain with Children is probably much more comprehensive than we ourselves need, so should provide a great launching pad for anyone considering any type of relocation abroad, covering everything from education and language considerations (for both you and your children) relative to the kind of community you're looking for (big city where you're likely to find lots of English speakers vs small and rural where you could get really stuck not knowing Spanish), to finding a place to live, starting a business and even health considerations for your pet (as well as your humans). Though geared, perhaps, a bit more to the UK expat (we're Americans), I've really appreciated the info gleaned and Lisa's personalized, easygoing sharing of her story to pave the path for the rest of us.

Thanks Lisa. I would echo other reviewers' comments about feeling a little "on the sidelines" as we too are Americans looking to temporarily relocate to Spain with our 11 year old daughter, and having some lingering questions about non-EU details. But Lisa writes from her personal (UK) background which comes through warmly in her humor and family stories. Any family, from the US or elsewhere, thinking of a move to Spain should consider this book Step #1 to begin getting a flavor of what bureaucratic obstacles lie ahead, but also the enchanting lifestyle that Spain offers to those who seek it and are willing to put forth the effort to make it all happen. Good news Americans!! Sounds like Lisa has a second version about to be published, with good information about visa requirements and paperwork for non-EU citizens. Muchas gracias Lisa.

My wife and I are in the beginning stages of considering a move to Spain with our kids. I was fortunate to stumble across Lisa on YouTube, and from her YouTube channel, this insightful book. Without question, this book is a MUST READ for anyone slightly curious about moving to Spain, let alone those with dedicated plans. Lisa does a great job providing the reader with a wide range of topics that one should consider when planning the move. She also drives home key points by adding real-world stories from her own experience as well as the experiences of the multitude of people she has helped over the years. Obviously, laws and regulations change frequently (e.g. visas, residency, healthcare, etc.). For such topics, this book effectively explains the landscape at the date of publication, while also pointing the reader to sites and resources to obtain the most up-to-date information. Lisa's passion for helping people make the most informed, responsible decision in moving is clearly evident (it jumps right off of the page). I also enjoyed her writing style - she took what could be considered boring topics (visas, residency) and made them surprisingly interesting.Again, I highly recommend this book and hope that my family and I will be a 'Moving To Spain With Children' success story in the near future!

Wonderful book and incredible resource. The author walks you through moving to Spain, the importance of timing, your location, the different types of education options and all the edu stages, their family story, and jumping through all the spanish red tape (residency, health insurance, NIE number, padron, starting a business, buying a property, transfer money, owning a dog). It is a quick read and a wonderful resource. The author is also approachable and willing to assist those going through the process of moving with a family. I have really enjoyed her book and it has been very helpful!

While yes, this book is primarily aimed at EU ex-pats, as someone from the U.S. looking to move to the Spain, with kids (!), this book (and the accompanying website and videos!) were a great source of realism, help and validation. The best part? The author is approachable and incredibly helpful off-line as well! [edit: The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because, as someone coming from the States, it was less targeted to some of our specific needs. As a resource for any EU resident, I think it's completely worth the 5 stars.]
