This book was a delight. Full disclosure, I am a sucker for woodland animals – and fuller disclosure, a huge sucker for Stephanie Graegin's woodland animals. The illustrations in this book are so full of wonderful detail and will keep your eyes moving for hours. It reminds me of the Richard Scarry books of my childhood which completely captivated my imagination. The story is full of emotion and relatable to any child (or anybody who used to be/still is a child) who had/has a beloved toy or has coveted another's beloved toy. The ending is so sweet and tender that it gave me goosebumps. Must read.

Matthew Polly is an interesting writer. When he was younger he travelled to China to study Kung Fu at the legendary Shaolin Temple. His narrated the experience in his book " The American Shaolin" - perhaps one of the best books on martial arts ever. Having thoroughly enjoyed the book, I looked forward to read his 2nd book on MMA. I must say that he didn't disappoint me at all.What gives credibility to Polly is his willingness to put himself through brutal training of MMA, BJJ, Muay Tai, Sambo, etc in order add authenticity to his book, as he did in his first book. He even takes part in an amateur MMA fight so to better understand what goes in the bodies and minds of the fighters in the MMA's Octagon.While his experience alone makes in worth buying the book, the reason for 5-star rating lies in the strength of his writing. His writing style veers toward self-deprecation, eschewing the massive ego and the macho BS of the typical martial artists and fighters. His writing often hilarious but at the same time displays a surprising intellectual depth in analysing the sports or human behaviours.All in all a hugely satisfying read for an intelligent MMA / martial arts fans.

Reading this book took me back to memory lane and my own development training in numerous martial arts. When the Gracie family first became known in the United States before the beginning of the UFC challenges I was fortunate enough to have attended two seminars in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu when they were in the Chicago area. Even though I was already a ranked black belt in Judo and Shotokan Karate at the time, I learned a lot at those seminars working with Rorian, Royce and Rickson Gracie. This interesting and entertaining book (Tapped Out by Matthew Polly) provides an insiders look at what the mixed martial arts is all about. The author trained for two years for his first fight in order to get first-hand experience for this book he was writing.This 280 page hardcover book is organized into three sections. You will meet some of the legendary mixed martial art fighters in this book which is just one of the many things I liked about this book. The first section (Act 1 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) the author explains Kung-Fu Panda, Descendants of Hercules: MMA 101, Gracies don’t tap, and other stories. The second section (Act 11 Muay Thai and Sambo) the author relates his experiences such as Bangkok Vice, Nursery school, there will be blood and other incidents. The final section (Act 111 Mixed Martial Arts) was the most interesting to me because the author finally loses enough weight and trained hard enough to finally have his first fight. I am not going to give away more than that.If you are an ultimate fighter and mixed martial arts fan you should check out this book. I thought it was a great read, but then I am a crazy lifetime student of the martial arts which makes me not the most objective guy when it comes to anything to do with training in the way of the warrior.Rating: 5 Stars. About the Author

As an undergraduate, James Turrell (born 1943) studied psychology and mathematics, transitioning to art only at MFA level. A practicing Quaker, he has described one of his earliest memories: his grandmother inviting him to “go inside and greet the light” at Quaker meetings. The recipient of several prestigious awards, including Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships, Turrell lives in Arizona.

I am a fan of James Turrell and have long admired his strangely beautiful works. Hoping to read his own descriptions of those works and do a deep dive prior to the public opening of Roden Crater, I had high hopes for this book.I'm sorry to report that it doesn't quite merit a place on my coffee table.The book contains multiple pictures of several of Mr. Turrell's works and an interesting two-page essay by Arthur Zajonc, author of the excellent Catching the Light: The Entwined History of Light and Mind, as well as three other short essays and transcripts of two Turrell interviews. Without any pun intended, it is safe to say the book is extremely light on content.Notably lacking is anything written by James Turrell. This fact, coupled with the barely average quality of the photos leads me to bestow a lowly two-star rating and withhold my recommendation to purchase this rather over-priced book.
