While researching a book to read, I learned that there are very few Andorran authors…and even fewer Andorran books about Andorra. So I chose this one for the information I would glean from it.The Good: She details customs, quirks, and cultures of the region with a journalist’s voice–never as someone who is fully absorbed in the moment. For my purposes (wanting to learn more about the country), this is exactly what I wanted.The Bad: this isn’t necessarily compelling literature. The reader doesn’t get attached to anyone, they don’t elicit sympathy or strong emotions. It’s like reading a travel book before a trip: it’s business, not pleasure.

Published in 1960, this is the account of the Australian writer's time with her artist husband and two young sons in Andorra and in Ibiza.Both places are on the cusp of modern life: but as Deane describes the costumes and folklore, the Andorran boys taking the cows to pasture, the weekly excitement of the baker's van - you could be back in ancient times.When husband Malcolm gets work on an Ibizan pig farm, they relocate - and here we have the comic tale of Deane's struggle to cross over to the isle with their large dog; attending a pig killing party, and a brief trip to neighbouring Formentera.But when suddenly and unexpectedly ejected from Spain (one of her earlier works about Malaga had caused offence), they find themselves crossing back into Andorra and victims of a dastardly crime: finding a policeman was "no easy task in a country where the total force including the standing army, numbers twelve."...Entertaining little work, giving a picture of two relatively unknown places as life once was.

When the Industrial Revolution came however, everything changed. It became a fine tuned art. This book goes throughout time to describe these changes in a relatively short amount of time. A great read and well illustrated!

A great overview of what is there on the knife marketplace, what do you need, how can you use or abuse a knife.He has a chapter on self defense and the knife, with a lot of common sense, knife fighting is a messy and bloody business. The author is also a great story teller and you have yourself a great handbook, history book and some great short stories about tactical knives and SF-use of that wonderful versatile item, you should always have on you. Be prepared, have knowledge, read this book.

The Tactical Knife is a read well worth making. I was browsing at a bookstore and my attention was captured by photographs in the book—psychologists call it “an orienting response.” It is designed to capture our attention and get us to buy things, e.g., this book. It succeeded; I now have three copies of the second addition—one for home, one for my office, and one to lend to friends who may or may not understand knives—and one copy of the first addition.Ayres covers much ground in the text—ranging from a basic definition of a tactical knife, to its historical development, to some of the roles it has played in our history, to evaluations of types or categories of knives, and then to specific evaluations of knives from a a variety of makers. In covering this ground, Ayres writes in a rich way that is available to the general user, conveys essential information, and can assist the advanced user; this is not an easy task and is one missed by many authors.Ayres notes that knives have multiple uses—they can cut both bread and one’s neighbor—but avoids a simplistic reduction to either “love” or “hate”. He employs stories; see the story of a very early folding knife found in excavation of Roman ruins that is at once beautiful and almost mystical. (p. 6) He tells us of how a knife was used by a 15 year-old to save his mother and other women from pending execution in the Spanish civil war. (p. 9) He explores the role of “long knives” in our country’s early history and Rodgers’ Rangers and the Cold Country Cannibals. (p.19) Stories, text, and experiences blend flawlessly with color photographs (a significant step up form the first edition) to give readers deep understanding of even deeper themes.

What I really liked about this book is that the author is an active knife user and has spent a lot years reviewing knives. Not forgetting his military and special forces background for me this speaks: Hey, this man's life depended on his knives. I would rather read and learn what he has to say about the subject. Very informative and not theory based but experience based which for me is added value.
