A Chinese Life

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This poignant graphic memoir is an intimate yet sweeping account of the convulsive development of modern China, as seen through the pen of Li, a longtime artist for a Communist Party newspaper in Yunnan, and in collaboration with French writer Ôtié. Li was a youngster in the late 1950s when his country embarked on the Great Leap Forward, resulting in millions dying of starvation, followed by the Cultural Revolution, when millions more were persecuted, imprisoned, relocated, or, like Li’s father, sent away for reeducation. The deprivations the nation faced during those turbulent two decades make China’s subsequent turn to unfettered capitalism—which Li depicts in all its crass rapaciousness—all the more remarkable. Motivated by the twisted patriotism that gripped the nation, Li joined the military, which led to his becoming a government propaganda artist and then cartoonist for a provincial party newspaper. His engrossing, affecting chronicle introduces the West to a masterful graphic storyteller; his expressive drawings and command of narrative effectively and movingly convey this extraordinary epoch. Much has been written about China’s devastating postwar era and its recent modernization, but the vividness of the comics medium, especially in the hands of as skilled a practitioner as Li, gives this rendition a unique power. --Gordon Flagg

The inkbrush art style really calls back to ancient calligraphic traditions while framing an account of one person who lived through the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and Deng's Reform Movement. It also remains authentically personal with memorable characters, settings, (and food) set across over 50 years of a life. While Otie and Li take pains to keep the work neutral especially for the first two-thirds of this great volume, bear in mind that Li was a member of the state at varying levels and a believer in many of the ideas although he also maintains a very pragmatic perspective on both the big picture and the effects on the individual. It's probably one of the best autobiographical works, graphic novel or not, I've read and absolutely recommended whether your interest is in China, the art, a life, or many of the other rich themes this work explores.

I'm already 150 pages into this book after my first sit down with it, and I love it. The story goes into detail about the life of a young Chinese citizen and their role during the Cultural Revolution. Illustrations are done well and the dialogue is great. I will definitely be reading more graphic novels by this author.I will say that it helps to have some idea of Chinese History to fully grasp and understand this story, or even believe that it actually happened. There are some parts of this story that will make your jaw drop. Perfect for any history lover or someone interested in Asian culture.

An autobiography that gives an interesting insight into China's history and its effect on the average Chinese. Political propoganda and nationalism is very destructive - not only to the individual, but the entire human community.

A nice collaboration between a Chinese artist and a French collaborator ( it is so easy to use the word collaborator when speaking about all things French!)Fascinating to hear about life in China from the point of view of a son of the privileged. I highly recommend this book as a good tool to put together the mosaic that is so foreign to most of us.

As a teacher of modern Chinese History, I cannot recommend this graphic novel too much both in terms of its content and the arresting quality of its graphic art. I have read few things that conveyed so well the tremendous changes endured (and also enjoyed) by the Chinese people over the last 64 years.

A great book, great drawings, worth while, beauty of drawings in this graphic novel was so moving. Its a wonderful history of China contemporary with great turns and changes and unexpected outcomes. I loved the book and highly recommend it.

I am so happy to know this book. Each anecdote helps me to understand Modern Chinese history and cultural background.

This graphic novel is more than a comic. It's a historic document. The explanation about the chinese life is awesome, also, the drawing style is unique. Five stars rating.

This beautifully illustrated, fully descriptive cookbook is a "must have" for serious stir-fry enthusiasts, both beginners and experienced wok users. At first glance, some (ok, many) of the recipes look a bit challenging, for there is much description in the cooking instructions. But a closer read reveals that these descriptions offer almost fool-proof aid to beginning and intermediate wok users and inevitably helps me avoid cooking mistakes. I'll bet experienced users will appreciate this information, as well. Also, I could go on a long time extoling the beautiful photographs, but will limit myself to saying, this is a great picture book, too. I luh-ve the "Essential Wok Cookbook"

I'm a bachelor, and retired. I can't afford to eat out as much as I did when working, so I do most of may own cooking. For a change every now and then I use a WOK. This WOK Cookbook has some very good recipes in it, and easy for me, the old bachelor, to follow.

Full of information, recipes that range from easy to complicated, and lots and lots of pictures. We are learning to use our new wok and this book is making it an exciting and delicious adventure.

This book really teaches the fundamentals of using a wok in various methods, how to season and maintain it as well. Worth the price.

Very easy and delicious recipes. Great photography. I highly recommend it! A great rundown on ingredients and methods to prepare great Asian cuisine.

This is absoultely one cookbook that everyone should own. We own the entire series and there is no other cookbook like it. There are beautiful pictures for every recipe and the recipes are very unique, interesting, and delicious. Several recipes will suggest ingredients that may be difficult or expensive to find but the recipes can also be simplified. My husband loves to cook and looooves this entire series of cookbooks. This cookbook will help any chef tap into their creativity and explore their passion for cooking and take it to a new level.

Great book..Great pics...takes the mystery out of Work cooking

A great addition to the kitchen. Covers serious techniques. Remember do not grab red-hot wok with bare hands!

This is a shockingly worthless book, and a total waste of money.Shame on me for not using the "Look Inside" first. Never would have bought it. Just in case you didn't look in side ...I presumed in was instructional for the most basic or possibly best new features of Premiere 2017. Instead it is less than the 46 pages stated (they include blank end pages and front copyright page (but who would want to violate the copy of such worthless text) -- more like 42 pages. It has large text with extra large line spacing and extra wide margins. 3 inches of combined margins leaves 2 inches of text per line, with some lines containing only 1 word, and others only 2 words -- a big line has 4 words when prepositions are used.Normal type setting would have knocked this book down to maybe 20 pages. If you get rid of the superfluous text about why a feature exists, and only how to use a feature, there are maybe 10 pages.Of the 50 features, some explain why they are there, but nothing about how to access the feature.I am a Prime member and have purchased dozens of computer "how to" books from Amazon over 20+ years for Excel, Access, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, 3D animation and others with total satisfaction, but this book is awful.Consider this relative value. I paid around $50 for a 900+ page "Bible" for Photoshop, absolutely full of useful information; and I paid $10 for effectively 10 pages of substantially worthless text. Again shame on me for believing/hoping some thing good would be in there; and for not using the "Look Inside"; but don't make my mistake. Google a feature and get a lot more guidance for free. The content would be better suited to a new product review article on a website someplace. It is really useless for practical purposes. This is a complete rip-off at the price. Buyer beware. Amazon should have declined to market this book for that price.Would you pay for a book like that, and that looks like this (see photo)?

That was it? Seriously? That wasn't a "guide" to anything, it was basically what you could read off of the Adobe website about this product, only written with bad grammar. I don't like to knock people trying to make a living, but ripping people off while doing it is just intolerable. Save yourself the money and buy a real guide.

Don't bother. Bad grammar, lane proofreadIng, weak structure. Any other guidebook will be better. Surprised it made the cut to be offered here,

About the Author

George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans Cross) was born on November 22, 1819 at Arbury Farm, Warwickshire, England. She received an ordinary education and, upon leaving school at the age of sixteen, embarked on a program of independent study to further her intellectual growth. In 1841 she moved with her father to Coventry, where the influences of “skeptics and rationalists” swayed her from an intense religious devoutness to an eventual break with the church. The death of her father in 1849 left her with a small legacy and the freedom to pursue her literary inclinations. In 1851 she became the assistant editor of the Westminster Review, a position she held for three years. In 1854 came the fated meeting with George Henry Lewes, the gifted editor of The Leader, who was to become her adviser and companion for the next twenty-four years. Her first book, Scenes of a Clerical Life (1858), was followed by Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860),Silas Marner (1861), and Middlemarch (1872). The death of Lewes, in 1878, left her stricken and lonely. On May 6, 1880, she married John Cross, a friend of long standing, and after a brief illness she died on December 22 of that year, in London.Rosemary Ashton, Professor of English Literature at University College, London, is the editor of the Penguin Classics edition of Middlemarch.

I read The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot when I was about 17 years old. I remember the experience because I almost literally could not put the book down. I read for 14 hours straight until I finished the book. I even remember cooking pork chops with one hand while holding the book in the other hand so that I could read while I cooked. I cannot tell you now what the book was about (that was almost 40 years ago), just that I loved it and devoured it, along with the pork chops:-). After reading Middlemarch, I plan to reread The Mill on the Floss and read all her other novels as well.I loved Middlemarch, but I didn’t devour it. I chewed it slowly - the writing too beautiful to swallow whole. It grabbed me right from the start and I knew I was in for a sublime reading experience. In many of the reviews I have read people have mentioned that Eliot’s narrative voice was not to their liking, finding it too didactic or distracting. I found her narrative to be one of the things I liked best. It was through this technique that most of the wisdom and life lessons were imparted. The narrative became another character for me, seamlessly blended with the rest of the characters.“We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, "Oh, nothing!" Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts--not to hurt others."Her ability to sum up a character in one beautifully written paragraph is remarkable. In describing Mr. Casaubon, one of the main characters, Eliot writes. “It is an uneasy lot at best, to be what we call highly taught and yet not to enjoy: to be present at this great spectacle of life and never to be liberated from a small hungry shivering self-- never to be fully possessed by the glory we behold, never to have our consciousness rapturously transformed into the vividness of a thought, the ardor of a passion, the energy of an action, but always to be scholarly and uninspired, ambitious and timid, scrupulous and dim-sighted.”In talking about another character, Dr. Lydgate, she says. “Only those who know the supremacy of the intellectual life-- the life which has a seed of ennobling thought and purpose within it-- can understand the grief of one who falls from that serene activity into the absorbing soul- wasting struggle with worldly annoyances.”Her dry wit and humor are scattered throughout the book like sparkling gems.“Miserliness is a capital quality to run in families; it's the safe side for madness to dip on”."He has got no good red blood in his body," said Sir James. "No. Somebody put a drop under a magnifying-glass and it was all semicolons and parentheses," said Mrs. Cadwallader."Oh, tallish, dark, clever--talks well--rather a prig, I think." "I never can make out what you mean by a prig," said Rosamond. "A fellow who wants to show that he has opinions." "Why, my dear, doctors must have opinions," said Mrs. Vincy. "What are they there for else?" "Yes, mother, the opinions they are paid for. But a prig is a fellow who is always making you a present of his opinions."“But Duty has a trick of behaving unexpectedly--something like a heavy friend whom we have amiably asked to visit us, and who breaks his leg within our gates.”Eliot is sympathetic to her characters, showing the good and bad in all, even the characters who would be despised if written by most authors. There is no black and white here, and yet the story is still compelling without the devise of writing purely lovable or despicable characters. We are shown what motivates the most hateful figures as well as those we are drawn to, and as a result there is no one in this book with whom you cannot empathize in some way. Her writing is infused with penetrating insights into human nature without ever losing compassion and understanding for their frailties. This empathy for her characters, perhaps more than anything else, differentiates her writing from Dickens and Austen.I now look forward to reading all her other novels, starting with her first one, Adam Bede. It should be interesting to see her progression from first novel to last. I had very few preconceived notions about Middlemarch before I read it and maybe that helped me to enjoy it all the more, but enjoy it I certainly did!

January 16, my birthday, I started Middlemarch by George Eliot (1871), a book I have wanted to read for fifty years. I finished it today, July 3.Set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829–32, and widely considered the greatest of Victorian novels, this mighty workhas often been compared to Tolstoy's War and Peace due to it's immense cast, and it's historical precision. Additionally, however, it reminds me of Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady (1880) due to it's depth of psychological analysis of human nature in all its rhythms and shades. Some have called Middlemarch a novel without a hero, but in the end it is the town of Middlemarch itself, with all its dizzying array of foibles and follies, loves and slanders, gossip and redemption, tragedy and laughter, wealth and poverty, that fills the role. The author never ridicules, never mocks, but simply loves her people, every one, and after spending six months with them I will miss every one, even the monsters, but especially the disappointed.Halfway through I discovered that Edward VII (1841-1910), Queen Victoria's eldest son, read Middlemarch annually from it's publication until his death, thirty-six years later. I can see why. Spanning eight books, and nearly a thousand ages, the author never falters.A sample:“Men outlive their love, but they don’t outlive the consequences of their recklessness."Every limit is a beginning as well as an ending. Who can quit young lives after being long in company with them, and not desire to know what befell them in their after-years? For the fragment of a life, however typical, is not the sample of an even web: promises may not be kept, and an ardent outset may be followed by declension; latent powers may find their long-waited opportunity; a past error may urge a grand retrieval. Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic--the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common. Some set out, like Crusaders of old, with a glorious equipment of hope and enthusiasm and get broken by the way, wanting patience with each other and the world."And, finally, the last and most famous line in the book, “...for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on un-historic acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in un-visited tombs.”

To give a masterpiece of world literature, which is what Middlemarch is, only five stars is to fail to acknowledge its greatness. Yes, it's a bit slow in the beginning; yes, it's long and written in a leisurely pace; yes, it's written in the English style of the 19th century, which is a far cry from modern prose. But in depth and precision of characterization, in its ability to penetrate to the core of human experience, and in its creation of a picture of an entire wold, there are few, if any books, that can match it. It is, indeed--as Virginia Wolf said--a novel for adults. Many others have pointed out the particular beauties and wisdom of the novel better than I can, so let me point out a particular feature that Amazon offers that I have used. If you buy the Kindle version of this Oxford edition of Middlemarch you can, for an extra few dollars, also get the Audible version read by Juliet Stevenson. (The Audible version on its own is $55.) Also, the two versions sync together, so you can read a few chapters, and then switch over on your IPad or iPhone to Stevenson's reading, and then switch back whenever you wish. Stevenson's reading is legendary for a reason: she brings the book alive in a very powerful way, and is marvelous at communicating its meanings. I learned a lot from listening to her--especially in revealing the humor in the book, which I missed in my own reading. But I also wanted to read on my own as well. Amazon had made this now possible at a very reasonable price, and I heartily recommend it.
