My wife picked it first and recommended it to me.I have long been a fan of WW2 stories, beginning with WSC's The Gathering Storm. Peet does a good job of keeping one anxious to read more. I think I like historical fiction since the authors can give us the benefits of theirresearch in other countries and SOE and OSS stories. I call them stories but they were really better than telling a tale from scratch.Tamar keeps one guessing till the end but you hope you're wrong. I look forward to more of Peet's work.

I love stories about WWII, but only if they are very well written and edited and very realistic. I read many of the Amazon reviews on this book before buying it, always starting with the one-star, going to the two and three-star reviews before making my decision. I decided to take a chance on this book and am very, very glad I did. Very well edited. The author obviously did a fantastic job researching the subjects, archived war files, even interviewing a surviving veteran parachutist who worked with the Dutch resistance just as the main characters did. The characters are so real, wonderfully crafted and developed, they pop off the page. Descriptions of the environments and scenery - just wonderful. Great suspense, mystery, twists and turns. So very accurate, even the weapons used by the Allies and Germans throughout the story. The story moves at a perfect pace, does not bog down. It was hard to put this book down, and I always looked forward to getting back into the story. Long chapters, alternating between 1944/45 and 1995 when the granddaughter becomes interested in her grand parents mysterious past stories. In my mind this is a clear five-star story. Mal Peet - congratulations on a wonderfully crafted tale of high adventure, personal experiences, the horrors of war and the evil inflicted upon the Dutch civilians by the invading Nazis. If you are interested in the subject matter, I recommend Tamar.

Excellent tale of espionage and human relationships during WWII. The scene shifts back and forth from present day England to WWII Holland, but it is never confusing. A young girl investigates a box of mementos she inherits from her beloved grandfather, and reveals a surprising story of resistance fighters, military and civilian. The book allows a close- up glimpse into the day to day concerns of the populace and their trained resistance leaders, who parachuted in from England. This is a story of ordinary folks doing heroic acts, in aid of freedom. The Germans are starving them out and killing people almost randomly, but the citizens resist the terror and learn to cope with the most horrendous burdens. In the present day story, the young heroine has to unravel a series of clues left to her, to ultimately reveal a secret kept since the war. It is a war story, and there's a fair amount of action and much suspense, but you never feel overwhelmed by the horror, at the expense of interest in the people. It is fairly uplifting, in the end.​

I was pleasantly surprised when I began this book and was immediately swept up in the 1944 plot line. The characters were well written and it was suspenseful. It showed the deprivations and the atrocities but also the strength and courage of the people willing to risk their lives to defeat the creeping evil that was the Nazis.The author did a good job of showcasing that people who try to do good can also cause great harm and that good people are capable of terrible things as well as good things even when fighting evil.The plot line set forward in time was not as engaging to me as it was easy to figure out exactly what was going on there and where it would take us. I suppose as a form of foreshadowing for the WWII portion of the book it worked ok, but I was just not as interested in that portion of the book.All in all however, the writing was good, the characters likeable and believable and I think it was well researched.

I realized my review is coming years after this wonderful book's release, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. Enough to use it in a book group I conduct. My heart was pounding from the start as I anticipated the men parachuting into Holland during World War II. The love story, the competition between underground factions as well as the competition between the two young men were well handled and riveting.The details about the horrors the Dutch endured under the Nazi occupation educated me about something I never knew.I believe Peet's handling of the material is well-suited for both adults and young people.Well done!

Historical fiction doesn't get much better than this. The author cleverly paces the wartime events with the modern 'detective' work of a pair of teens trying to unravel the past - and find out its far more tangled than they could have ever imagined. The story is bleak at times but I particularly admire the many issues the author explores by the end - jealousy and betrayal brought on by the pressure-cooker of occupation and resistance, the guilt and silence of the survivors, and finally the nature of forgiveness. The ending is very good, leaving an open question to the readers - would you have forgiven? You will wonder for days afterward.I read the Kindle edition and for the Kindle readers, this was a very well edited product and many notches above the usual horrid quality of ebooks. It's time to hold the publishers accountable for shoddy workmanship, so in that spirit, thumbs up to Candlewick for doing justice to Mal Peet's brilliant story.

This Young Adult novel is set in both present-day Britain and during World War II. The present-day story is told by 15-year-old Tamar, whose grandfather has committed suicide and left her a box of WWII items. The main part of the story, set in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation, is narrated in third person. It concerns two young men, Tamar and Dart, who are resistance fighters. On the one hand, we read their story, and on the other we are in the present, trying to determine not only what happened, but why. A very good novel.

This is a great little publication which can be used to remind you of the guaranteed rights we have as American citizens. It seems with court cases and politicians always trying to erode one or more of our rights, it is important to know our rights so we may defend them at every attack. Even our closest allies which are democracies, such as Canada and UK do not have rights enumerated in their constitution. Their guns can be taken away, as has happened in Australia and now with marauding gangs and other criminals now with no resistance there, they wish they had their guns back. With UN representatives telling us we have free speech, but not to criticize Islam, reminds us how precious our First Amendment rights are to criticize anything, including the political correctness at the time, or speaking truth to power.Arm yourself with this pocket U.S. Constitution. Get more than one copy, to give to others so they may be reminded. Freedom does not remain in ignorance! We will be purchasing more of these in the future!

This version is annotated by Richard Beeman, a genuine, non-ideological constitutional scholar. It is NOT the right wing/Skousen/LDS version described in many of the critical comments. For some reason, Amazon has applied the same set of comments to multiple versions of the Constitution, which makes it virtually impossible to determine which ones are worth buying - and reading.This version is well worth buying and reading, and reading again. In addition to the text of the original documents, it offers excellent historical context including a discussion of how the various articles and amendments have been interpreted by courts (not ideologues) through the years. It's a very valuable resource.UPDATE: In a comment to this review, RedRocks explains that if you try to order the paperback version of this Penguin guide, you'll actually get the Skousen/LDS version instead. (My brother confirmed this.) Kindle orders get the correct Penguin version. Amazon needs to correct this - RedRocks has complained about it before but Amazon has done nothing.

Original text that has been amended is enclosed in brackets, with a footnote to reference the amendment. The preamble to the Bill of Rights and the full text of all 27 amendments are included. The full text of the Declaration of Independence is included. The dimensions (3.25" x 6.5") make this a true "pocket guide". I recommend buying multiple copies of this pamphlet to give to family and friends, as I have done. Every American should be intimately familiar with these documents.Apparently, Amazon lumps together the reviews written for various print versions of the US Constitution. All print versions are not equal and many of the Amazon reviews do not apply to the print version I reviewed. The print version I reviewed has a painting of George Washington, quill pen in hand, on the front cover. It is copyrighted by the National Center for Constitutional Studies. Accept no substitutes.

This booklet (blue, with an eagle on the front, 6" x 9", 32 pages, with the author of "Founding Fathers"), claims to include "the US Constitution, including the Bill of Rights" - but it does NOT include the Bill of Rights!The Bill of Rights adds the extremely important amendments that protect freedom of religion, speech, gun rights, etc.. I was stunned when I realized it was missing. Very disappointing!

Having just quickly perused all 44 pages of this USA e-book, just want to point out that this version of The United States Constitution is not annotated. It does have an excellent live index, very useful.

Amazon has the unfortunate practice of lumping reviews for several different editions together. The kindle edition I got did not have the "disclaimer" that several people objected to (I'm a liberal, but that would have annoyed me too.) It just started out with the table of contents and the the familiar Preamble.

Large font easy to read. No Skousen nut case seditionist commentary. Just as it was written by the founders.

Every American should own (and Read) this book. It was written for Us! Very highly recommend.

Expanding the usefulness of the PI.

I received an early copy from the publisher. I have say there's nothing Evil about the projects - I was kind of hoping for a automated Nerf turret or something slightly nefarious. This book isn't even the Diet Coke of Evil.However, I wish I had this book when I first received my Raspberry Pi. The transition from an Arduino to Raspberry Pi is fairly hard because a Pi is very powerful and configurable, but along with that comes a large amount of complexity. Chapter 1 of the book would have saved me a bunch of time and Googling. It's laid out nicely and covers the things you need to know in the order that you are likely to need them.The projects in the book are worth reading. However, most projects are fairly expensive to build. But the nice thing about this book is it concretely covers a bunch of Pi projects that I've read about and wanted to know more about without the expense of having to do it myself. Example of these are: using an Arduino as a coprocessor, building a supercomputer cluster with Pi's and Software defined radio. The book takes researching these things from hours of Googling to a 20 or 30 minute well organized read.There is one project I do intend to build which is a Pi as a Lego Mindstorm controller. My kids both went through First Lego League and I have a bunch of parts around. I think this would be a fine project for my son and I this summer.I have a long held grudge with Tab books (the publisher) because of the shoddy books they used to put out in the 1980's. However the last couple of books I've received from them have had great content and were edited very well. I'm going to have to reconsider my old timey grudge with them.This book is quite good and has inspired me to tackle one of the projects in the book. That plus the great introduction to Pi's, is the most you can expect out of a book like this, so that's why I'm giving it 5 stars.

I got a little confused when I ordered this; it's not a second edition, it's a Volume 2. So yeah, you should probably keep that in mind up front.There's quite a bit of interesting material in here, and it's mostly a step above the usual Pi project book material. The supercomputer... okay, that's pretty old school, relatively speaking. So is software-defined radio. However, the gigapixel camera system (really more of a panoramic setup) is an excellent demonstration of how to use a RPi with a (Canon) camera. I actually hadn't heard of the Message Queueing Telemetry Transport protocol before, but Norris explains it well and puts it to excellent use to construct a thermostat. And although I'm sure many people have used Arduino and RPi together, Norris combines the two with a pair of Xbee transceivers to build a simple remote Lidar device. And also there's Legos (ie using a Pi as a replacement for a Mindstorms EV3 brick to operate a robot arm).In general, Norris delivers. You don't need to be an expert to use these projects, but they're still pretty sophisticated, the sorts of things you'd see on advanced DIY shows like Ben Heck, Hak5 or TWiT.tv's Know How. It's definitely worth reading, especially if you already have Norris' first Evil Genius book.

This book offers a very wide array of interesting projects to do with your Raspberry Pi. It's a good sampling where at least one project is bound to tickle your fancy; each project touches a different domain.While it requires some knowledge of coding and computers, I am really impressed with the density of information the author has managed to pack; he's also avoiding a "do as I say" approach, but gives you the various options, their benefits and drawbacks, and how to proceed. From the beginner to the expert, everyone is bound to learn something. In my opinion a tinkering 12 year old will be over the moon with this book, but as a professional programmer who's been juggling with Unix since the 1980s, I still found much to learn, and best of I never found it boring. I particularly liked the writing style: it's friendly and familiar, but also accurate and concise.Some minor criticism: the book would have benefitted from a companion web site with downloadable source code, and links to suppliers for the accessories.I think the best way to learn a new computer language or a new computer environment is to start a project, but sometimes it's hard to get project ideas when one is not familiar with the possibilities of the platform. This book acts as a perfect guide and is a wonderful helper, also saving you lots of time getting started. Very highly recommended.

This opens our minds to such a more postive look and how to keep lilly more postive to live her life to the fullest. From the day your told your world becomes consumed how long will we have them. Then you read this and you understand you dont focus on how long you will have them. Its how strong you can help your loved one be to challenge cystic fibrosis. I would ask anyone facing something any heath challenge to read this postive, informative, humorous book. You will be ready to take on this secret world. And i say secret because so few people understand or even know what cystic fibrosis is. This book helps you understand you can still be in charge of your life. And a postive to anyone you know dealing with c f . You will learn how not to let this disease Define you. I will finish up by saying thank you Tim for writing this book. I hope anyone that reads shares their experience in reading this. I promise will put down with a new fire in living life to the fullest.

As the mother of a CF child who almost made it to her ninth birthday, Tim’s story was overwhelming and emotional. On one hand, I had to read his story in stages because my throat was too clogged to think and my eyes too blurry. On the other hand, I almost felt guilty as I thought about all the angst, pain, suffering and mental struggles that my Chrissy did not have to live through like the sad times in between the pages of Tim’s life. I am thrilled with the idea that God has pushed Tim further along in his blessed life with Katie and little Felix. The struggle is real and Tim’s strong character is fabulous. I am so glad that Julie on We Love Memoirs suggested that I read this book. It was educational and illuminating and I applaud Tim’s courage and candor.

This book is a very insightful and honest introspective account of Tim's life as a cystic fibrosis (CF) patient. It start from his youth and then focuses quite a lot on his daily events as he nears his tremendous milestone of turning 40 years old. Tim does not hold back in his challenges and descriptions of his mechanisms of coping with CF. From the rigorous medical treatments, dealing with relationships, coping with a full-time job, his dedication to physical activity, and to dealing with the challenges of his CF comrades are some of the topics covered. If you don't know much about CF, it will enlighten you of the challenges faced by CF patients, even though they often appear fine on the outside. If you are aware of CF, this will give you hope and courage to keep pushing forward daily, and to have the appreciation of the subtle beauties in life that are often overlooked by most us. This is a terrific account and pushes the awareness of CF to another level. It should also give others that have CF in their lives at some level the hope to keep fighting on.

Tim Wotton grips you into a delightfully raw, unscripted look into his life with Cystic Fibrosis. He articulates the thoughts of every CF adult regarding healthy people and their nonsensical complaints about life. Wotton shows everyone that despite having a genetic, uncureable disease you can live a normal life with Cystic Fibrosis. A wonderful read and an inspirational book for all. This book will is a must for family members of a cf person because it truly conveys what a CF patient goes through on a daily basis. I really enjoyed this book on Kindle. Tim Wotton writes with wit and intelligence and provides an insight into CF which I'd previously known little about. Despite living with this terrible disease his entire life Tim proves that no matter how awful things may seem it's possible to live the most productive and fulfilling of lives. A fantastic book with lessons and wisdom that will have meaning for most.

Tim is my mate. Being able to say that is a privilege. Reading this book is an emotional roller coaster. It doesn't matter if you know Tim or not, you should read this book to get an insight into living with CF and hear the story of a wonderful person.

Tim Wotton in the run up to his fortieth birthday gives an honest and at times humorous account of what life is like living with Cystic Fibrosis. Tim is one of the oldest survivors of the disease and is an inspiration to all. We can all take something from this book that will educate and inspire us... whatever we do... Life is what we make it and Tim has certainly made it. Tim was told he would not make it to his seventeenth birthday, so with his fortieth birthday in sight he decides to write down his thoughts and the book takes us in diary form through his thirty-ninth year, through to the milestone birthday.I learnt so much from this book, not only about Cystic Fibrosis, but about courage and determination and that a positive outlook to life can make a huge difference. The book is great for raising Cystic Fibrosis awareness. All who have or know someone with the condition will get some helpful insights and useful information from reading this book. The book will also be helpful to anyone facing challenges in their own life. It is always much easier I find to talk and learn from people who are going through the experience than get bogged down by all the medical jargon. I thank Tim Wotton for opening my eyes and making me more aware to a medical condition, I knew very little about.
