More importantly, the author meticulously ties in the wider historical events that confronted the actors during each time period. The story covers Gandhi & Churchill’s early years in India (after Gandhi was born in Gujarat, Churchill had spent about three years in his early twenties with the British Army in Poona, Bangalore and Afghanistan), in England (Gandhi’s studies and New Age friends compared with Churchill’s up and down career), in South Africa (their simultaneous participation in the Boer War) and in India (with the non-violence - and violence that led to Freedom at Midnight). The book is especially significant in describing in footnoted detail the politics within their respective countries through the turbulence of two world wars affecting all of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This history contains fascinating details, with so many facts I did not know about either man, or how the wider history of various events were tied together during that period.Although this book does not explicitly state Churchill’s hidden “Great Game” strategy for Partition that was revealed in the recent film Viceroy House (to deny the Soviet Union a path to the sea), Arthur Herman does say that Churchill at least in 1946 had established a secret communication channel with Jinnah encouraging a separate Pakistan.The book leaves it to the reader to evaluate the long-term significance of results of Gandhi and Churchill’s actions. Herman concludes with, “Taken together their story is an inspiring tribute to the power of human beings to shape their own destiny, and a warning of the dangers of self-delusion and pride. Most of my history knowledge pertains to European and US history. By interweaving the "modern" history of India with the history of the British Empire, the author gave me familiar information to provide a foothold as I wandered into Indian history. It's a well-written story and accessible.

A very fine dual biography. Those wishing to learn more about the founding of modern India and Pakistan and the withering away of the British Raj are encouraged to buy and read this book.Churchill and Gandhi are giant personalities of the first half of the last century, with their political and moral acts still echoing in today's world. Dr. Herman writes with authority, balance and insight while explaining the motivations of these two inspirational leaders--both having serious flaws and blind spots--who were so at odds for several decades over the future of the British Empire and, more specifically, the fate of its subjects on the subcontinent.

This book reveals the history of Gandhi and Churchill and their unique historical roles without 'taking sides.' There were many competing cultural and political dimensions to these unique men who were at the center of the ferment in their very different planets.

Herman offers impressive but not dry scholarship about these two world figures. He really goes into the historical background and shows how the different early experiences of India (and other areas of the world, like South Africa) shaped the worldviews of both Churchill and Gandhi, and how they would later clash.

I'm new to network security monitoring, and this is an excellent guide. I love that they share an open source option, with just about a step by step guide to implement, after a decent breakdown of the process and technology of packets.

This book has a lot of great content regarding Network Security Monitoring in general, but is especially helpful if you are rolling out Security Onion. There are a lot of videos and online tutorials out there but I like to be able to put my hands on it and have it all in one place. It's not necessarily for beginners, but readers in all stages of professional development will benefit from the content. It is well written and presented in a way that flows nicely. Lots of helpful tips and insight.

The "Cybersecurity and Cyberwar" book told you what was going on and how to protect yourself in general. This book gives you the ninja skills to actually seal your network borders and measure the level of the threat. Various methods and opensource tools are used to build a high level of protection for the reader's system.Some of the tools demonstrated have a user interface, but most of the operating system defense requires command line operation so be prepared to do some heavy screen reading. Also, a large amount of filtering of log files may be required to see a pattern in the attacks. Be serious about this or be prepared to be a victim. The current state of network protection doesn't have a middle ground.

Book in perfect condition, of course it was the contents that I got it for and that is excellent. Overall very pleased with the book and contents if I may be redundundant.

As we enter the murky age of Internet of Things (or "Internet of Insecure Things", "Internet of Evil Things", "Botnet of Things", take your pick) monitoring your home network has to become a common skill. Although by no means confined to application in home environments, The Practice of Network Security Monitoring does allow a modestly technically adept user to do just that. This book walks you through understanding the concepts, installing the needed software, configuring network monitoring components, and using some of the many free solutions for detecting unwanted or malicious traffic.For those who want to apply this work at home, allow me to make a few suggestions about corollary purchases you may need to make. I recommend dedicating a desktop or tower computer to the task of server. It doesn't need an especially powerful CPU, but it should have a lot of RAM, at least 8 GB. Purchase your RAM with a view to exanding; using 8GB as an example, don't buy 4 2GB sticks, but rather 2 4GB sticks. Later you could by 2 x 4GB or 2 x 8GB sticks to upgrade memory. You will also need at least 1 extra NIC (Network Interface Card), which will be in permanent 'listen only' (aka "promiscuous") mode. You will be using the free Security Onion solution, running on the free Ubuntu 12.04 Linux, so you can skip buying a license for Windows if you purchase everything from scratch. Finally you will need at least one network device that can duplicate traffic. The book will explain the difference between spanning (or 'mirroring') and tapping, but unless you are a sufficiently knowledgeable about networking, you will probably do well to buy a Dualcomm DCSW-1005 USB Powered 5-Port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch TAP (Port Mirroring) - it is drop dead simple to install and use.You really can do this - enjoy!

My 9 year old son received this in his Easter basket last year, and he has truly loved it. It is short and simple, but full of age-appropriate information and beautiful prayers. It introduced my son to some saints that he had never known of before. It lends itself well to bedtime reading--we read one saint each night and then pray the accompanying prayer together. It's a book you can come back to over and over again.

This is a wonderful book! I bought it for my son for his First Communion. I wanted a book about saints that was written for a child and this one is perfect. The language is easy to understand and there are pictures of every saint, which both my son and I enjoy. So for each saint, there is a little biography, a few lines about how you can pray to this saint, a picture, and then on the next page a prayer that relates to the saint. My son and I have been doing one saint a night. It's a special time for us before bedtime. We are able to discuss the saint and say the prayer together. As an adult, I find this book very interesting as well. I'm learning more about the saints and I'm also really enjoying the prayers. So far, all the prayers embody virtues or characteristics that you can pray for and I really like this. They are prayers that are good for all ages. I could not have picked a better book about the saints for my child.

It is a lovely book that should be in every Catholic home that ha children under age 8. .. or more depending uponinterest.

Almost a little too silly for my likes. Having an interest in the genre, and being a fan of most Osprey publications I felt it was worth the cost, but not one I found myself wanting to read from cover to cover. I would have enjoyed it more had they kept it to a specific period rather than trying to cover all of the history of the United Sates, or so it seemed. Personally I think WWI or WWII only would have made it a much better booklet.

Love this book. It is very fun and fluffy and a perfect companion for any pen and paper RPG or even miniatures based RPG games.This book will be a staple in my future game writing plots for the foreseeable future.

Ken Hite, Lovecraft, American History, it's a perfect intersection. My only issue is that he's so good at connecting dots I can't find the line between history and fiction, which makes me go do more research. It's hard to fault a book for inspiring more reading.

I have been reading books by the Osprey line for just under 40 years. I don't think I have ever quite enjoyed one so utterly. Giving H.P. Lovecrafts macabre pantheon the "Osprey" treatment was genius.

Excellent little book about the fictional battles between the US government and the forces of the Cthulhu Mythos. The artwork was very good, although I would have liked to see more. Still and all though, for a 75 page Osprey pub, it is very good value for the money. Highly recommended.

A little strained, but what Cthulhu isn't? Fun little overview though and useful for campaigns, especially if you want to introduce a bit of horror to the setting.

Another interesting alternate history read. Good inspiration for Wargamers and RPG Gamemasters who want to involve Cthulhu mythos into their eras.
