Having consulted countless self-help books written by gurus who appear to have it all figured out, “Goodbye, Things” was a breath of fresh air to me. Fumio Sasaki’s tone is quiet, contemplative, open-minded, and above all, humble. I easily identified with his description of how he used to be: constantly making myself miserable by comparing myself to others; berating myself for not keeping up with household chores; spending way too much time on internet research to buy something, only to never get much use out of that item. And if a self-proclaimed “regular guy” like him could go from being a depressed shop-a-holic living in a dark, messy apartment to waking up with the sun every morning feeling happy and grateful, I couldn’t see any reason not to give this minimalism thing a try myself. When I discovered the Japanese version of this book over a year ago, my husband and I had already downsized quite a bit after reading Marie Kondo’s “Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” But reading “Goodbye, Things” has had even more of a dramatic impact on our lives, mainly because it made us think fundamentally about how we use, and why we keep, certain things. Our priority went from “living in a nice apartment full of things we love” to “minimizing our footprint to maximize our time and freedom.” We used to talk about buying a condo someday; now the idea of taking out a mortgage or being tied down to a place does not sound appealing to us at all. We used to tell each other we should entertain guests more often; now we realize that was only because our friends like to host dinner parties, and we felt guilty for not reciprocating. We have accepted that the number of things we can realistically take care of are much, much smaller than we once thought.“Goodbye, Things” also helped us let go of items that sparked joy but we weren’t actually using or taking good care of. I really resonated with Sasaki’s observation of the “Silent To-Do List”: the more objects we have in our surroundings, the more they contribute to our already overwhelmed sensory load, and the more time and energy they take up. My husband and I used to have three bookshelves full of our favorite books, but now we only keep a handful that we are actually reading. We also let go of our long-owned musical instruments, after we finally came to terms with the fact that playing them just was not our passion or priority anymore. As difficult as this was, now it feels as though a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders.Overall, I found this book to be a very helpful and inspiring introduction to minimalism, and for my husband and me, it really did change our lives.

I purchased a bunch of Kindle books on decluttering a few years back, including the Marie Kondo one. They had some good ideas, but somehow I just kept collecting stuff. A couple weeks ago, this popped up in one of the srollbars on my Amazon homepage, and I picked it up (Kindle) on a whim.So glad I did! For whatever reason, this one matched me better than the others, possibly because it looked like the author had some of the same issues I struggle with (books, in particular). One of his other offhand observations was that his old bed was heavy, and that was pretty much a direct hit too! I live with a couple cats in a one-bedroom apartment, and I refuse to get a bigger place just because the square footage has too much stuff for me to set up a writing/creative area. With this book, I figured out a way to open up a lot of space in my current apartment, and while I doubt I'll make it to a real "minimalist" living space, I can definitely see getting down to a slender "mediumist" place. (I love my backup toilet paper!) This book doesn't "shame" you either, if you don't happen to want to get down to practically no possessions, it just does a wonderful job of explaining how to let go and find your own balance so your stuff doesn't take over your life.

At first I wasn't sure about this book. "Great," I thought, "another single, male, Fight-Club-quoting, Steve-Jobs-idolizing minimalist is here to tell us how superior he is for reducing his life to a mattress and a MacBook." I wasn't far off in some ways, but before long the author's openness and lack of pretension had completely won me over. The first part of the book is practical advice, and though he includes references to minimalist friends with spouses, hobbies, and children, it's mostly oriented toward people like himself. (The advice is still pretty good). For me the best part of the book was the second half, where he talked at length about the changes minimalism had made in his inner life. I found myself nodding in along as he talked about silent to-do lists and the procrastination they cause, the joy of living in the present, and finding value in just being ordinary.Recommended to anyone who thinks of minimalism as chilly or self-centered, because this book will fill you with warmth. Not recommended to anyone who is just looking for the perfect manual. That's not what this is trying to be.

I'm very happy I purchased this book. As someone who wants to reduce belongings and simplify life it's hard to justify buying another book but this does have a ton of wonderful ideas to help you let go, simplify, etc. (tangible and nontangible things).

So many things I've read on minimalism focuses on decluttering your possessions. One level up from this are the most typical reasons to minimise and the typical benefits. Goodbye things goes one level higher by discussing how your whole lifestyle, thought process and perspective can change. I feel like this book puts into words the fundamental obstacles and urges people who are interested in minimalism have but are unable to articulate fully. Reading this book gave me such a sense of relief, like all my unarticulated yearnings to simplify and find happiness had somehow tumbled out and were being reflected in every word written on the pages of this book. For every person looking to become a minimalist but can't quite find the motivation, I highly recommend this book.

I've read dozens of minimalism books- definitely some better than others, but this one by Fumio Sasaki is probably one of my favorites, if not the absolute favorite. His words inspire without being condescending or laying on the guilt. He makes you believe that minimizing your possessions is not only doable for the average maximalist, but also that doing so will revolutionize your life. I have already been in the process of minimizing, but this will serve as inspiration now and again in the future. Enjoyed it so much that I intend to start it over again tomorrow.

I just finished reading Reengineering The Corporation by Michael Hammer & James Champy. Organizations have been traditionally structured around the division of labor, as introduced by Adam Smith. This principle stated that people work most efficiently when they have only one well understood task to perform. While this specialization has led to local effectiveness on the given task, it created complex processes to knit and combine all these simple processes together. This has for the most part created inconvenience, inefficiencies and higher cost for their respective companies and customers. From a customer viewpoint, only the overall process matters, and success is achieved when the good or service is delivered to them quickly, at the right cost and quality. While in the last century corporations were able to get away with having complex processes and inefficiencies today's forces namely "the Three Cs": Customers, Competition, and Change are driving them into unchartered teritory. What the authors introduce is the principle of Reengineering. They define reengineering as " the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary, measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service and speed." Although the definition sounds simple, the consequences run very deep. It involves every aspect of a company's inner working such as: organization structure, empowerment, career paths, the role of information technology etc. The book goes on to detail general principles on some common themes that evolve from such exercises such as who will reengineer, which opportunities to tackle, the enabling role of IT etc. Finally despite the fact that every company will have individual nuances when it embarks on such an effort, the authors do give some example companies that have undergone and continue to undergo reengineering efforts (Hallmark, Taco Bell etc.).One of the key learnings for me, coming from an IT background is how the authors think about IT within the reengineering effort. While they do acknowledge that IT is a great enabler of reengineering, it is by no means sufficient in and by itself. Companies that simply automate parts of a process or install systems without rethinking the processes and people around them do not reap the desired benefits and do not achieve dramatic improvements. This is a truly revolutionary book in this area, given both the scope and impact its principles can have on a corporation and how we think about them. A highly recommended must read!

There are some books that introduce new concepts or approaches that lead to changes in the way we view the world around us. Some are fads and quickly disappear into a footnote, while others become part of a stream of thought that transforms the way we manage. Reengineering the Corporation is one of the latter types of books. While it was often used as prescriptive at the time it was introduced in 1994, it has become more about the paradigms of how we view the concept of how change is designed, led and measured in business. With the advent of broad integrated business systems that logically define many business relationships, the approach recommended in the initial printing has had to evolve to accomodate the development in IT applications, however, the concept of radical change presented here remains a valuable point on the timeline of the evolution of business process managment thought. The book is well worth rereading.

Michael Hammer is the guru of business processes. Though the first edition of the book was written in 1998, the content in the book are timeless and are equally valuable and applicable today. The core idea of the book is to forget the assembly-line and specialization-oriented process design, which clouds the overall goal of producing superior output and customer value-add. Assembly-line mentality promotes specialization and gives rise to narrow job focus, which leads to misaligned incentives and undermines the overall goal of delivering value to customers. Instead, the author proposes that processes be innovated and radical re-designed and integrated horizontally. This is a classic book on business process and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in this subject.

So many things have been written since this book that it almost seems useless to read THIS book. But I enjoy reading the original insights on occasion and connecting them with current thinking. Somewhat repetitive in terms of telling analysts they should think outside the box, and the examples used for illustrating certain points seem ancient, but overall a pretty good read.

Great book. Great information for managers and owners that really want to change their company operations. The core message is that smart companies find it no longer necessary or desirable to organize their work around Adam Smith's division of labor. Tasks orientated jobs in todays business enviornment are "obsolete. Today's world requires companies to work around and through processes. This book is a great parallel to a humaneering strategy that is promoted by Dr. Jim Pepitone at the Humaneering Institute.Question to ask. Why do we do what we do? And why do we do it the way we do? This means disregarding all existing structures and procedures and inventing completely new ways of accomplishing work.I'm excited to see that other consultants are realizing that humaneering is the new to look at an organization, specially service organizations.

Timeless book, very readable and entertaining too.

It's sometimes difficult to find good managerial books that are based on more than pure management theories. This book is an exception. A must read piece of art crafted by people with feet deeply planted into the real way of doing things at corporations. This book strains people's brain in the sense that they feel compelled to think about what is going on at work heading for a better company through reengineering established processes. Specially for me, this book also brings hope, hope that no matter how critical some process (which in many cases we are part of) may be, there is always a solution that can be pursued. But the book also comes with a major drawback. One may think that the solution for all problems is reengineering.

#867,606 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The 1988 Pascal-based "Crafting a Compiler" left out some stuff. This 1991 2" thick (in paperback) expansion implements its examples in 'C', making the details MUCH more accessible, making detailed what most compiler books gloss over. It's a little dated now, but on the other hand, the science of Compiler Design hasn't evolved much since the 1970's, though the languages certainly have. If you want the nitty-gritty implementation details of Recursive Descent, LL(1), LR(1), and LALR parsers, it's in this book.

This book covers a very difficult subject. It is intended for those programmers or students that really want to see what is going on under the hood. The majority of programmers today have no idea how things really work at this level. They are used to managed frameworks that do everything for them. In my professional opinion, that is great for rapid application development but the side effect is that it severely dumbs down the programmer. This book, on the other hand, is for those who are prepared to do some serious work. If you just want to create GUI applications for users in a quick fashion or even if you want to look at the C language because you are curious about it then this book is not for you. This book is a well balanced combination of theory and practice and it is much more digestible than "The Dragon Book", in my opinion. For example, while I have found "The Dragon Book" a great resource for teaching college level students it feels too theoretical at times and difficult to follow. I have found that some readers of "The Dragon Book" get lost in all that theory and gradually lose interest. This book, on the other hand, is nicely balanced between theory and practice and many readers find it much more interesting. Even though there have been advances in compiler theory since this book was published, the underlying theory and practical examples still apply and I still find this book a great resource. I highly recommend this text to those programmers who really want to do some serious work and those who are interested in getting into the heart and basic essentials of Computer Science.

I teach compiler construction and I personally hate the "Dragon book" because it is beyond the level of many students. Fischer and LeBlanc present most of the same material and they make it readable. Theirs was the first book to devote an entire chapter to symbol tables, the central data structure that all components of a compiler use. There should be a law mandate that compiler courses should use either this book or Thomas Parsons'.

This book is quite dense and requires some serious work to be understood properly. It is quite complete even if it is a bit old compared with the latest twists in compiler theory. It is a mix between theory and pratical implementation. This is its main strength and its main weakness: it is not a comprehensive theorical work on compilers neither a complete "pratical" tutorial. Anyway it is a good introduction for the (college-level) student who is willing to do some serious work.

This book has a nice balance of theory and practical algorithms. There is enough detail to allow a (patient) reader to implement his own compiler tools, though like most other books on the subject, this book leaves you with the feeling that the area might have died about twenty years ago (no insult intended!); an update needed, to include OO languages, some treatment of the complexities associated with parsing modern languages, C++ etc. All things considered, still a great book, well worth the money.

I have oredered this book overseas but the shipment was much faster than I expected. This is great book for whom looking for a good reference about compilers.

I usually only write a review for products I really like, but this purchase merits a 1 star review because I really DIDN'T like it. As a retired ICU nurse who has type II diabetes and has at least 1 smoothie daily, I was hoping this little book would contain some ideas for smoothies I had not considered. It was a profound disappointment. I have no idea what kind of education or training the author has, but she does not have a good understandingof the pathophysiology of diabetes, or of glycemic index or load. For example, she has one recipe for a smoothie which includes whole apples and pears-and she advises peeling the fruit? Why in the world would you peel and destroy the fiber and nutritional value which is in the peel of these fruits? Yes, I know that apple peel can contain some pesticides-if you don't eat organic, it is easy to scrub them before you eat them.In another, she describes juicing 3 oranges to add to the smoothie-and in another, using 1 cup orange juice. You might as well just add a cup of sugar to your recipe, Amanda! It is not news to any of us who are paying attention that the juice from citrus is highly glycemic, but eating the fruit itself provides some protection by slowing down the absorption of the sugar. She describes using almond milk or greek yoghurt, but I don't see any mention of using a protein powder to increase protein, which is good for diabetics. So in summary-this book is not only useless for diabetics, but could be harmful to the newly diagnosed or less informed consumer, trying to find their way to better health. I do not recommend it.

I just finished this book, it is really easy to read. I have only one complaint and that is that it doesn't give any dietary information, such as carbohydrates, sugars, etc. I use an insulin pump and need to account for everything I eat.

How is this book considered for diabetics? All of recipes contain fruit or sugar of some sort. I actually threw the book in the trash.

This book lacks any dietary guidelines for calories and carbohydrates, sugar and sodium levels for the recipes. These are essential for a valid recipe for diabetics. I asked for a refund immediately!

Haven't tried any recipes yet, but looked through the many different options for a healthy smoothie. Have diabetes, and need good ideas, so I was really happy to come across this book. Thank you!

SO many yummy smoothies have been made! As a diabetic is so grateful for this book as it helps me stay on track with my diet.

Good list of smoothies.. But.. wish there was a "pick one or two" item (vegetables/fruits/carbs) per category to make it simple. I juice 1st AM and I don't really want to deal with a following recipe..

I only found two smoothie recipes that interested me. I gave this to a friend who is more adventurous with smoothie flavors.I’ll just stick to the free smoothie recipes on Pinterest.

I have to tell you: I adore this book, and for a number of important reasons. First, it is an accessible introduction and reminder of how central viruses are to the biosphere, with a unique and engaging perspective. With all the talk about the "microbiome" in the news, the more numerous and just as important "virobiome" does not get as much attention or PR. We tend to reflexively think of viruses as "bad," when in fact viruses help keep ecological systems in balance (and that may very well include issues of human health). Bacteriophages, bacterial viruses, are not only fascinating as a model system, genetic tool, and driver of ecological balance....but beautiful to behold. This brings me to something special about this fine book, by authors possessing expertise, writing chops, and enthusiasm (as well as quirky humor): the artwork. I am used to "scientific publications" being somewhat dry and technical. Not so with this publication. This is a beautiful as well as informative tome. If you have any interest in the intersection of art and biology, this book is simply a "must have."Let me say something really important to finish up this review: the Amazon system states that this book is "temporarily out of stock," and implies it will take some time to receive. I ordered my copy early January, and received it in less than a week. I have no explanation for the verbiage. If you order this lovely book, you will get it quickly. It's a great book, and sits with pride on my office bookshelf.

This books binding is damaged it is angled making it difficult to open, I have never seen anything like this before

Wonderful book, a master piece!

This book stimulated me to start learning about contemporary biology. The last time I had a biology class was in 1961! The drawings really made it fun to read. I also got the book within a week of ordering it.

I absolutely love this book - it's the perfect combination between accurate scientific knowledge, fun personal stories, and a rarely-seen artistic interpretation! I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in viruses!

what an impressive summation and perspective(s) of the virus world; thought provoking!

The year 2015 celebrates the centenary of the first documentation of phages by Frederick W. Twort. Since then, however, phages (the viruses that infect bacteria) have often been ignored, discounted and underestimated. Forest Rohwer and his distinguished co-authors now address this glaring omission. A centennial field guide to the most abundant biological entities in the world has been missing until today. In the tradition of other field guides the authors include a global map showing the known geographic range of each featured phage as well as its habitats. Additionally, phage genomes are represented by two versions. First, an artist-created overview of the variety of genome structures of phages when travelling between virion and host (e.g., linear or circular, single-stranded or double-stranded, sticky ends, direct or inverted terminal repeat nucleotide syntax). Second, a detailed genome map allows the reader to follow each gene, finding information about its function, its homology with other page genes and the localisation of its protein product. With this field guide a second century of phage study has begun.BacteriophagesA bacteriophage is a virus that infects and replicates within a bacterium only. There are 10(31) phage virions on earth. This is ten times more than all cells that constitute cellular organisms. Every second, 10(24) phage infections occur on this planet, whereas lytic infection by a single phage yields 20 to 400 progeny per infectious cycle. In the human gut we can find 10(16) phage virions. Together there are 4 million families of viral proteins on earth. If all 1031 phage virions were placed side by side they would stretch to 42 million light years! The book heralds a second century on phage research, but under very different circumstances. In the first century phages have been viewed as curious prokaryote parasites now they are part of the pre-dominant global virosphere. All chapters start with a description of genome structure, followed by encapsidation methods, the commonly shared host organism and its habitat and a note on its lifestyle, a global map where the samples on this planet have been taken and, interestingly, a detailed map of genome architecture, each segment linked by colours to the various lifestyles typical of phages.Main Behavioural Motifs of PhagesIn chapter 1 an overview on the phage lifecycle answers the questions of why there are so many genes in such simple organisms and why it is beneficial to have a temperate lifestyle. Additionally, a coherent phage classification for the twenty-first century is presented by Daniel Nelson. This is biosemiotically important because phages code their information into all available nucleic acid sequences from single-stranded RNA to double-stranded RNA to single-stranded DNA and double-stranded DNA. In this same context Forest Rohwer adopts a pioneering role in that he and Rob Edwards put forward the phage proteomic tree, a proteome-based classification system that groups phages relative to their near neighbours as well as in the context of other phages. In chapter 2 an overview of how to test the water for phages is given and, very important, how ‘GOD’ (Generation of Diversity) is the driving force in phage evolution and survival; this means the generation of variety that paves the way for biological selection. The brief history of environmental phage ecology from marine to human ecosystems, which means phages use every environment, is also of considerable interest. Mathew Sullivan describes the metagenomic approach in which phages modulate microbial population structures to determine microbe identities. In chapter 3 the entry strategy of phages into their host organisms is investigated. There are several distinct strategies. Virion proteins are discarded and only the genome enters the host cell. However, recent research has demonstrated that nearly all phages package essential proteins inside their virions before placing themselves within host genomes. Some proteins serve as start-up replication tools, others as bodyguards to detect host defences and yet others assist during genome delivery, forming protective tubes for genome passage or escorting the genome into host cell.In chapter 4 the takeover of host replication systems is discussed. When a phage enters a host cell, an abundance of metabolic regulations are organised and regulated for efficient survival and reproduction. The interesting thing is that the phage does not imediately kill its host cell but instead converts the cell into a virocell, a finely tuned virion factory within a complete virion order. This is a complete turnabout and ‘manipulation’ of the former cell, but a new dominant genetic content order. In another publication exactly this process rises the question whether virocells represent a really new cellular identity. If this machinery functions to produce a number of virions the cellular organism is executed. However, in this interplay the phages and the targeted host cells continously develop counter-defence and entry tools and strategies, immune defence and counter-defence both striving constantly for evolutionary novelty in order to reach their goals.Chapter 5 focuses on phage replication and the mosaic construction of phage genomes. The general strategy seems to be to minimise intergenic regions and encode efficient proteins. Additionally, some phages such as Lambda invest in a complex genetic switch to govern lysis or in contrary ist lysogeny, depending on a decision process. Some phages exchange genes and non-coding regions extensively, which means they are highly dynamic and volatile, as the phage world continously exchanges information within its own natural genetic language.Chapter 6 investigates how viruses are chromosomally creative. They constantly change or invent their genomic content in order to adapt to emerging new host identities. Phage evolution therefore occurs rapidly. Some replicate within their original approach; others are assisted by helper phages. Importantly, some reuse defective parts which in other content arrangements are reinstated features previously lost or deleted. In difference to decade lasting assumptions that defective viral genetic parts are degraded or at best resource for nucleotide recycling processes it is now obvious that they may play essential roles in new genetic content order. Additionally it must be mentioned that in capsid innovation phages are ingenious thieves. In chapter 7 escape strategies out of the host are presented. Every bacteriophage with a double stranded genome, whether RNA or DNA, shares a holin-endolysin technique for host lysis. Holins are responsible for lethal lesions in the cell membrane. Interestingly, all known phage holins share similar functions but do not have a common origin. This means that lytic competence does not evolve from a common ancestor but from several roots to generate lysins, a commonly shared tool/technique of escape. Additionally holins indicate the evolutionary origin of nuclear pores of eukaryotic nuclei, a pre-condition for the signaling pathways that regulate replication, transcription and translation in every eukaryote.Behavioural Motifs Represented in Gene Word OrderThe detailed list after each described phage species and how the gene word order in these phages is structured are especially relevant to biosemiotics. Here we find the interactional motifs in phage life which are not solely about replication but the phage-centred goals that are not the same in cellular hosts and look rather different. Additionally, the stored information that is essential to phage life is clustered. This means the conserved genetic contents that resemble single behavioural motifs are not in a coherent line-up, but are split up into several information tools throughout the genome. The most prevalent motifs in phage gene word order that are commonly shared are:• on the prowl (for cellular host)• entry• takeover (of host replication behaviour), then the two different behavioral motifs: a• lytic replication cycle or conversely a• lysogenic replication cycle, followed by the• (re)assembly, the• escape. For regulation properties this is followed by• transfer RNAs and the important regulatory tools hidden in• non-coding RNAs. Additionally, we know some genetically conserved regions of• multiple functions coded within these sequence structures and also the• unknown functions of sequences that are relevant in future research. At the end of the book two Appendices offer special background information such as technical notes (the sources for the field guide data), the strategy for drawing phage ‘portraits’, the phage proteomic tree, global maps. If one wants to probe the meaning of biosemiotics one has to look at the context in which a competent agent uses the sign, i.e., the concrete behaviour within its habitat. To biosemioticians the lexicon of phage behaviours in Appendix B is of considerable interest.Relevance to BiologyThis book provides the ideal accompaniment to the abundance of research results in virology of the last decade. Although it focuses on bacteriophages it constitutes the missing link in the rich world of the virosphere outlined by some of the recent publications. It demonstrates that cellularly built organisms are like islands in a virospheric ocean, and it gives the most coherent overview available of the most abundant biological entities on the planet. Especially in the chapters about adaptive immunity in bacteria, which is the result of highly adaptive and dynamic CRIPR/Cas (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and CRISPR-associated proteins), the authors convincingly demonstrate that the gene word order represented in the genetic code is not the result of selection of mutation (replication errors), or computable and formalisable procedures of self-organisation of matter, or the result of physics and chemistry behaving according to thermodynamic laws. In contrast to these dominant narratives of the evolution of the genetic code for the last six decades it is now evident that viruses and virus-like agents edit the genetic code, determine the gene word order of host organisms, drive evolutionary novelty and remain as adaptational tools in the genomic content most relevant for the survival of their host organisms. This is a major paradigmatic shift not only in biology which means life is not the result of interactions of signs but of interactions of agents that are competent to use signs.ConclusionThe book is written by several leading researchers in their field and contains seven chapters with rich appendices of additional information on the phage world. Although the book meets all the criteria of scientific research and investigation it can be read by novices in the field, encouraging each reader to integrate this excellent database into an up-to-date understanding of life in general. Additionally, which is most important, the excellent and unique artwork of Benjamin Darby which illustrates the phage morphology as well as the variety of behavioural patterns is convincingly the best way to drive imagination regarding the fascinating world of biology. Although phages are essentially different from cells of prokaryotes they represent the main habitat for phages. Together with their host they continuously drive the evolution of both and therefore are crucial for microbial ecology. To denote phages as molecular assembles which function mechanistically as selfish entities really misses the point of these agents.

I have seen the proof copy and highly compliment all who made this book so beautiful to behold. No one will need to struggle with readability. Illustrations are fantastic. All those hours of collaboration have paid off. Congratulations!

Old Testament Theology: Israel's Gospel, by John Goldingay

Review

"Abundant and rich material for Christian preaching." (Old Testament Abstracts, Volume 33, 2010)"Goldingay has produced a scintillating exposition of Old Testament narrative, describing its rich 'particularities' (p. 37) and offering a wealth of critical suggestions for its theological appropriation. His treatment takes account of recent scholarship, exhibits a keen awareness of methodological debates and is written in a highly readable, even genial style. For theologians, pastors, students--anyone wanting to think through the Old Testament theologically (again) with an expert guide--his book is a must-read." (Stephen B. Chapman, Scottish Journal of Theology, February 2010)"Goldingay helps us all learn more about the Old Testament to the end that we more faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus." (Reed Lessing for Concordia Journal, October 2007)"Here at last is an OT theology that follows the whole of the biblical narrative and treats it all with theological seriousness. Goldingay conveys his prolific insights so readably that this will be a rich resource for all serious readers of Scripture." (Richard J. Bauckham, University of St. Andrews)"Goldingay's Old Testament Theology boldly moves in new and welcome directions. Readers will appreciate his commitment to this Testament as a work with its own integrity, whose voice the modern world needs urgently to hear. Furthermore, his great exposition of its central themes hugs the biblical text in a way that will help us all, scholars, students and preachers alike, to capture his sense of excitement and delight in these ancient writings." (H. G. M. Williamson, University of Oxford)"Goldingay's extensive and penetrating work on the Old Testament, embracing most aspects of its interpretation, ensures that this three-volume Old Testament theology is a major publishing event. His presentation is based on a firm belief that the Old Testament has its own theological ideas which do not in themselves require validation by the New Testament, yet which are indispensable to its understanding. Refreshingly free from constraints imposed by the history of the discipline, he allows the Old Testament itself to set the agenda, weaving story and theology with persuasiveness. He is here, as always, insightful and contemporary, wearing massive learning lightly. It is a most significant addition to Old Testament interpretation." (Gordon McConville, University of Gloucestershire)"In this volume, John Goldingay, as usual, presents himself as a knowledgeable, sensitive interpreter who pays close attention to the text and to the faith given through the text. The focus on narrative indicates the peculiar way in which biblical faith is mediated that is not excessively tamed by the usual categories of doctrine, piety or morality. The title of volume one, Israel's Gospel, exhibits Goldingay's acute theological passion, one that warrants close, sustained attention." (Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary)"One of our preeminent biblical theologians has given us a comprehensive way into the Old Testament. Focused on the story, this volume takes one deep inside the texts that tell the story to learn what matters about both story and texts. The particular illumines the larger picture, and the whole provides a context for seeing what matters in the individual texts. What seems at first glance to be very familiar is seen with fresh new insight. From pastor to theologian, all will learn from Goldingay's masterful interpretation of the Old Testament." (Patrick D. Miller, Princeton Theological Seminary)"This book is immensely valuable. Reading it is like sitting at the feet of a mature, experienced and wise Old Testament scholar and getting a personal tour of the theological significance of the entire narrative of the Old Testament. It is written in a way that is accessible to students wanting an introduction, but there is plenty here for the further education of even senior Old Testament theologians." (Tremper Longman III, Westmont College)

Everything Goldingay writes is...Gold.This *has* to be the most underrated OT theology on the market. The harmony of quality and content and practicality and scholarship just isn't found anywhere else. Before anything else - Waltke, Kaiser, von Rod, etc. - read Goldingay! It's far worth your time! You wont find a more balanced and passionate scholar.

This is such a rich book especially for those who wants to know more about Old Testament Theology.

For some people, their initial reading forays into the Old Testament go something like my first attempt at reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship. It was one of the first real works of theology that I ever read, and I began with much enthusiasm. However, due to a combination of inexperience with studying theology and the fact that I was reading a work translated from German, my progress slowed the farther I got into the book. I completed The Cost of Discipleship—a challenging and truly worthwhile read—fully aware of the tenuous nature of my understanding of Bonhoeffer’s words.I think the Old Testament can sometimes seem similarly foreign and intimidating, and some Christians get discouraged when they immerse themselves in it for the first time. For readers in this situation, a wise guide is helpful. I found John Goldingay’s Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel, the first book in his sprawling three volume series on the Old Testament (which he prefers to call the First Testament), to be a helpful resource for becoming better acquainted with shape and nature of the Old Testament’s story. The Shape of Goldingay’s Theological ProjectSince Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel is the first part of a larger whole, it might be helpful to point out how it relates to the other two volumes in the series. This first volume reflects on the Old Testament’s narrative account of “Israel’s story and of God’s involvement with it” (p.28). In this book, Goldingay traces the story of God’s people from creation all the way through their return from geographic exile, ending with a final chapter looking at the New Testament’s story in light of the Old Testament narrative.Goldingay explains that in the second volume of the series, Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Faith, he focuses on the contemplative writings of the Wisdom literature and the Psalms, looking more explicitly at “the Old Testament’s faith and hope,” and addressing subjects like Israel, God, and the nations (p.28). In the final volume, Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Life, he uses the instructions of the Torah and material from the Psalms to explore the “vision of life” found in the Old Testament, including things like worship, spirituality, and communal ethics (p.28).Now of course, in a book longer than 800 pages, it’s impossible to bring up all of the interesting themes and features that one might like to discuss. Nevertheless, I do want to look at a few aspects of Goldingay’s work that I found to be noteworthy. He argues that, “The fact that the Old Testament opens with narrative and is dominated by narrative makes narrative form the appropriate starting point for Old Testament theology” (p.32). Broadly speaking, Goldingay avoids extended speculation regarding the sources and traditions that may or may not have made up the “world behind the text,” focusing instead on “the world of the text,” the final canonical form of the Old Testament books, for his theological commentary. He explains:I have generally not based theological inferences on scholarly theories concerning where, how and why biblical documents came into existence. I try to infer the theological significance of the Old Testament narrative itself, to analyze its discussions of complex theological questionings, and to see what the stories tell us of who God is and who we are. (p.41)The book as a whole is organized in a theocentric fashion and is structured in a manner that seeks to stick close to the shape of Israel’s story in the Old Testament itself. I appreciate how this can help readers become more familiar with the overarching flow of the Old Testament narrative and avoid getting lost in the weeds of genealogies and other more difficult passages. Goldingay’s prose is for the most part accessible, though the sheer length of this work does mean that some readers may need some extra stamina to successfully reach the end of the book.Listening to the Old Testament’s Distinctive VoiceIn addition to Goldingay’s defense of narrative theology in the Old Testament, I also think it’s worth bringing up the polemical nature of his work. Now by polemical, I’m not talking so much about his treatment of the Old Testament as his conviction regarding the neglect of the Old Testament by the Church (p.23). Rather than listening to the distinctive canonical voice of the Old Testament’s witness regarding faith, he charges that many readers have restricted the Old testament, in practice if not in theory, to providing a backdrop for the writings of the New Testament.Goldingay is far from alone in making this critique. Joel Green, for example, echoes this concern in Seized by Truth when he notes that “the disestablishment of the place of the Old Testament in the two-testament Christian canon prompts a theological crisis often overlooked” (p.36). Craig Bartholomew similarly asserts that “it is vital that we attend to the discrete witness of each Testament in its own right” in Introducing Biblical Hermeneutics (p.100). Like these other scholars, Goldingay judges that many, if not most, Christians have not truly listened to the distinctive voice of the Old Testament, and this is a pendulum shift that he seeks to correct in this book, which gives his introductory section a distinctively polemical slant.Because of these concerns, Goldingay tells readers that he won’t be focusing on a number of major interpretative lenses through which many Christians traditionally read the Old Testament. He doesn’t focus on the Old Testament as a “witness to Christ,” or on how “what is concealed in the Old is revealed in the New” (pp.26-27). On this matter, he notes that, “What is concealed from the Old is revealed in the New. What is revealed in the Old is taken for granted in the New” (p.27). Similarly, he avoids spending time on the ways in which events in the Old Testament like the Exodus foreshadow parts of the New Testament. He argues that these events:[C]ame to be seen as “types” in light of their proving to have that capacity. [However] In the Old Testament events such as the exodus and practices such as sacrifice have significance in themselves, and I want to focus on what we can learn from that. (p.27)It is natural for Christian readers to shift uncomfortably in reaction to someone resisting Christological readings of the Old Testament, but I think it’s worth reemphasizing that Goldingay is reacting to what he sees as an interpretative overemphasis, not a practice that he wants to rule out completely (at least that’s how I read him). Goldingay’s words here seem to support this:I am prepared to say that the Old Testament’s insights must be seen in light of those of the New, but only as long as we immediately add that it is just as essential to see the New Testament’s insights in light of those of the Old. (p.21)There is a difference between saying “I don’t want to focus on this” and “one should not focus on this.” I may be reading Goldingay too charitably, but my intuition is that he is asserting the first statement, rather than the second one. Goldingay’s passion for revitalizing the role of the Old Testament in the conversations and practices of Christian churches leads readers into a number of interesting hermeneutical questions, but the overall point seems to be that he wants to both introduce people to Old Testament theology and correct what he judges to be the harmful neglect of the Old Testament in the rhythms of most Christian churches. He wants them to grapple with the Old Testament text itself. While there area few parts where I worry that his efforts lead to overcorrections, Goldingay nevertheless raises an important point here that I hope isn’t too easily dismissed by critics.ConclusionIn the writings of the New Testament, we find passages describing the Old Testament as speaking directly of Christ (for example, John 5:46 and Luke 24:27) as well as other passages affirming the ongoing value and significance of the Old Testament in more general terms (I think especially of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 in this regard). It seems to me that Christian readings of the Old Testament are necessarily retrospective: in the light of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, Christians encounter the Old Testament with fresh eyes, discerning meanings and patterns that are brought out by the illuminating light of the Word made flesh. However, such figural readings shouldn’t entail the annihilation of the Old Testament passage’s reality and significance in its own right, as Richard Hays argues in Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels (p.14).For Goldingay, the Old Testament is a forgotten voice that needs, and deserves, to be given more attention. As he puts it, “I want to give the Old Testament its own say in the conviction that it will tell us something that is in the spirit of Christ” (p.24). For the most part Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel accomplishes these goals. Even in the portions that are especially stretching and challenging, wrestling with the text alongside Goldingay makes for a good initiation into the rich world of the Old Testament narrative.*Disclosure: I received this book free from IVP Academic for review purposes. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.

Now that the third and final volume of John Goldingay's tremendous work is now available, one can properly assess just what he has left us with. The short answer is this: it is simply a magisterial effort. It is a first class work which will be irreplaceable for many years to come.It is simply amazing for a variety of reasons, not least of which is its massive length. The three volumes comprise over 2,500 pages (2743 pages to be exact). Bear in mind that in the decade he took to pen this, he also produced a number of other important works, including his equally impressive 3-volume commentary on the Psalms, which totals over 2200 pages! Talk about prolific. This OT theology is simply superb. Goldingay is just utterly steeped in the Old Testament, and has done a superlative job of elucidating its themes, its theology, its vision, its grandeur, and its contents. Almost every aspect of OT studies is entered into here, and he is always up to the task. The first volume focuses on "Israel's Gospel". It examines the OT narratives from creation to the first coming of Christ. The second volume deals with "Israel's Faith". This concentrates on the Prophets, the Wisdom writings, and the Psalms. Volume three centres on "Israel's Life". It examines the ethical, spiritual and worshipping life of Israel.Goldingay is of course a Christian but he argues that we must consider the OT on its own terms. He rightly notes that "the Old Testament's insights must be seen in light of those of the New, but only as long as we immediately add that it is just as essential to see the New Testament's insights in light of those of the Old."Or as he says further on, "It is inappropriate to describe the New Testament as the `authoritative interpretation' of the Old without adding that the Old Testament is the authoritative interpretation of the New."Indeed, he reminds us of the vital importance of the OT: "only when people have learned to take the Old Testament really seriously can they be entrusted with the story of Jesus." We fail to properly understand the NT gospel unless we have a firm grasp of the OT.Goldingay is more than qualified to tackle this job. He has been for many years Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, and is one of the world's leading evangelical OT scholars. He has penned numerous important works on OT topics, and this trilogy is in many ways his magnum opus, capping off a distinguished career.Of course other helpful OT theologies written from an evangelical/conservative viewpoint have appeared over recent times. One thinks of John Sailhamer's Introduction to Old Testament Theology (1996); Paul House's Old Testament Theology (1998); and Bruce Waltke's An Old Testament Theology (2007), for example. But this is by far the most comprehensive, the most detailed and the most incisive work going. Anyone wanting to master the OT needs this superb set. Mind you, I find myself disagreeing with the author on a regular basis. For example, he is quite open to freewill theism, and thus his take on such areas as divine omniscience and impassibility will not please everyone. But he certainly gets one thinking, and he is always careful to tentatively - and respectfully - push what might be considered controversial topics. His many decades of careful scholarship and theological awareness, combined with a more than capable writing style, make this work a pleasure to read and a joy to contemplate. If you get only one Old Testament theology, get this three volume work.

This book presents an idealogy which is very much evangelical. It is exegetical in approach, and has no "center". His interpretaion is masterful. This book contains the basis for some good ideas for an evangelical to embrace a form of ecology. [...]

knowledgeable and thoughtful and comprehensive. the kind of studies we have been needing more of.
