What won me over was the author's obvious enthusiasm for the premise. This overcomes any small flaw. The Tide takes off at breakneck speed and never slows. The only downside is the multi-subplots and locales. That approach appears to be chosen to establish the series and give a global feel a la World War Z.That leads me to Melchiorri's choice of creature. It is a zombie/monster hybrid that is refreshing for the genre. The being's capabilities set up more challenges for the human race than the usual shambling hordes. I always gravitate to the elite soldier angle and this is served up in large doses. At times this outing reminded me of a Jeff Long or Matthew Reilly novel. That is high praise as I love their books. This last comment/question is for the genre overall...why all the series? I know the answer of course but wish there were more brilliant standalone efforts. Why? Because as much as I enjoy the first in the series I always grow bored as they go on.
This book starts in WWII, with a scene from Island 731 (or Unit 731). This is an actual place where the Japanese experimented on people and worked on developing chemical and biological weapons. There are non-fiction books about Island 731 that discuss what happened there, and I recommend reading one, but prepare to be horrified. Then we fast forward to the present. A CIA (Marilyn) operative sent a team of mercenaries to find out what happened on an oil drilling platform in the Atlantic ocean that was being used for covert weapons of mass destruction research. All contact with the people there was lost. Soon, contact with the mercenaries is also lost. She also contacts Dom and his group of hunters about the Huntress. Dom and his group investigate possible biological and chemical weapons attacks. They have a full medical lab in the ship where they are able to isolate people and work on vaccines and medications to combat the weapons. As you can probably guess by now, some type of agent was released (they don't know if it was accidental or on purpose), and when Dom's group gets there they are attacked by the walking dead. They are barely able to get off the platform and some of his people are exposed and put into quarantine on the ship. The ship's medical crew gets to work on identifying the agent and finding a treatment.Meanwhile, the CIA agent is on the run because her employers do not want any connection with this situation. Unfortunately, the disease has arrived in the US and is spreading quickly. The story then focuses on Dom's family and how they struggle to survive with their neighbors. Both Marilyn and Dom are on their way to rendezvous at his house, but getting there is not as easy as it would seem, even for people with the most advanced weapons in the world. The action is fast and furious and non-stop. It is very intense, and I almost felt exhausted reading about their fight to get home. The main reason I liked the book was because it focused on the medical end of the disease. Most books about pandemics have people saying, "Aren't the scientists and doctors working on a cure?" In this book, we get to watch them experiment with different treatments and it is refreshing to have intelligent, dedicated people working ferociously to save their crewmates and maybe the world.I definitely recommend this book. It's not your run-of-the-mill zombie book. The disease is horrifying, the bureacracy of the CIA is infuriating, and the fight to contain and control the disease is heroic. Dom and his hunters on the Huntress are warriors and his family isn't half-bad either.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, and I gave an honest review.
A couple of elements really take this zombie tale to the next level and give it a kinetic cinematic feel. The setting (an oil rig is ground zero for this variation of a zombie outbreak), the tech (one character boasts a cool bionic arm and the heroes navigate the seas in a badass science vessel) and the creatures themselves (let's just say these monsters are familiar yet feature a few cool new twists). All the toys and science are cutting edge yet grounded and believable. This is part action-adventure at the high seas blended with the intensity of a post-apoc survival story. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, pulpy thrill ride. The testosterone-fest even has room for a couple of badass female characters and a conspiracy. A worthy addition to the genre.
unless a plot's resolution is absurd or copycat, i figure any book i've read to the end deserves 3 stars. 'the tide' kept me reading, but didn't make me believe that book 2 would be a best-use of my reading devotion. i like apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic stories generally, but i've read too many to go forward in a series without a strong expectation that further installments will earn my interest.i gave 'the tide' 4 stars, not 3 stars, because the medical aspect of the story is so well told, and, more so, because the science behind the outbreak is so refreshingly new. i'm unaware of any books that promote a similar causation. the science is convincing, whether or not it is real. i jotted a few notes while reading in order to research some of what i've read, so in a way i hope mr. Melchiorri 'made it up.' i would be as delighted to discover that i've been so fully tricked as i would be to learn about new aspects of existence. either way, the science, real or not, deserves an additional star.
This is the first book by this author I've read, and what a wild, fantastic ride! This book has great thrilling action, special ops guys doing their thing. There is science and medicine along with all the spec ops action. This is a unique twist on the typical "vampire" thriller turned more toward biological terrorism. But the terrorism is unknown in this book -- that is who the terrorists are. I suspect "they" will be much different than today's Islamic terrorists. There is plenty of violence and action. If that's not your thing, stay clear of this book/series. But there are also a great set of characters -- the spec ops group that fight against biological threats. The author is great at setting up a believable plot that flies beginning to end. This is the first of three books, so it sets up the threat and the core characters. I've already bought the other two books and will start the second today. If this type of plot is your thing, then you will greatly enjoy this book.
