Folk art, with its simple lines and bold colors is an outstanding source of ideas for needlepoint. This beautifully produced book takes as its sources all kinds of items from the museum, from hooked rugs to weathervanes and delivers them up as lovely needlepoint. The projects are mostly stitched in Basketweave, with commonly available threads such as floss, pearl cotton, and Persian wool. This is fantastic because it makes the projects accessible to stitchers everywhere. The reference section at the back of the book has instructions on making all the stitches and a color conversion chart. The projects, designed by Karyn Gerhard, are divided into five sections: Daily Life, Beasts & Bugs, Flowers, Hearts, and Geometrics. Each section begins with a listing of the projects. The projects each have a picture of the original piece and have the needlepoint photographed in a room setting that showcases more folk art (for even more inspiration). The introduction to each project talks about the project and the other folk art in the setting. Each project also has a material list, information about stiching and finishing it, and some lovely and inventive ideas for variations. That seems like a simple thing, but many books lack it and you can tell from the variations that Ruth and Karyn are needlepointers themselves. The charts are large and in full color with synbols as well, making them easy to read. The color key not only lists the symbols in the chart with the thread and color number, but it also lists how many skeins are needed. If you want to stitch one of the projects in the book, you can take this and buy everything you need all at once. Another useful, but often neglected item. Also in this section is extensive information about the objects used as inspiration, additional information about needlepoint, finishing instructions, and a list of sources. A inspiring book, beautifully produced. I'd love to see more like it.

Its a high quality map, but it only shows major roads. i was hoping it would have more detail on country roads and other side streets.

I am a roadmap collector and recently bought the RandMcNally maps for all 50 states, plus a US Interstate map. I like the large scale used and helps considering my vision is less than ideal. I also use these maps to supplement the official maps that I also have for the entire country

Item was a gift and enabled our son to travel around Illinois visiting relatives and other activities on a recent visit.

Old style map. I like using them.

Fairly good map. Needs to add more county roads.

easy to read

OK Map. One half of the state on one side, half on the other. Not suitable for hanging on a wall - which is what I wanted to do with it. The problem with Amazon sometimes is the descriptions. No where did it say it was two sided or not. And, of course, no pictures of it opened up.

What can I say about a map.....but, it works!!! They are hard to find at gas stations!!!

Check every page of this book as soon as it arrives to make sure it's printed correctly!!!The book is great, but the printing of our copy is horrible! My daughter didn't need it for a few weeks after I bought it, so we didn't even discover the problem until the return window had passed. There are actually MISSING NOTES (and FINGERINGS) on MULTIPLE PAGESâ€”they're literally cut right off!

This is the best scale book for students learning how to play 3 octave scales. Carl Flesch is traditionally the standard scale book for advanced violinists, but this one is better for teaching in my opinion. I also use it to maintain my playing every day as a professional and have found it extremely helpful for the upkeep of my skills.

It seems like a solid scales book. I read a reviews on this and the violin version that said things about it being good for a 2nd year student and that it was the only scale book you would ever need. Those reviews were a bit misleading. Definitely take the "advanced" wording seriously... there isn't a scale in here that is less than 3 octaves and all require extensive shifting knowledge, so no, I wouldn't say second year, and it's quite possible you'll need another scales book in your viola study... perhaps a beginner or intermediate one. :) But that's not anything against this book.... it is called "Scales for Advanced Violists" after all.So, I am well aware this is outside of my ability and needs right now, so I returned it but it has a pleasing set up, is easy to read, is a good quality print and gives plenty of fingering help, even two different patterns for some of the more fingering-intensive scales (chromatic, arpeggios, etc). I'm new at viola but not new at music... it's a good book. I'll come back to it when I'm ready for 3 octave scales.

I like this book (in both the violin and viola editions) for a good, solid source of scales and exercises. It has some great material on double stops in varying intervals, as well, with some exercises I'd never seen before that I've found very useful.

The Vaisesika Sutras are one of the six major dharsanas, or schools, of Indian thought. Surprisingly few books, however, have commented or explained these sutras in an exhaustive manner. Until now. This new book by Subhash Kak is a welcomed addition to Indian scholarship and explains the Vaisesika dharsana in a careful, systematic and enlightening manner. Kakâ€™s commentary is especially important given that the Vaisesika is frequently overlooked in favor of other dharsanas such as Vedanta or Samkhya. Kakâ€™s presentation of the Vaisesika is both exhaustive and enlightening.Kakâ€™s exposition contains an introduction of the Vaisesika dharsana. This summary precedes a translation of the Vaisesika Sutras, with Kakâ€™s commentary on selected sutras. Two essays conclude the commentary.As the title indicates, this book deals with the nature of dharma, physical reality. Most explanations describe the Vaisesika as consisting in the atomistic theory of reality, and stops there. According to Kak, the main components of reality in the Vaisesika dharsana is matter and mind. In the Vaisesika dharsana the prominence of mind is made explicit. While this is a general feature of most dharsanas, in the Vaisesika dharsana goes further to refine this distinction. Indeed, in the nature of things, mind, the Atman, takes precedence to and is the progenitor of the inner substance underlying physical matter.The sutras as explaining that physical reality is the result of a conjunction of mind (purusa) and matter (prakrti). Not content with this statement the Vaisesika goes into some length at how matter evolves afterwards from that conjunction, Kakâ€™s commentary on the sutras adds to the substance of Vaisesika by giving a perspective through modern physics. For example, the Vaisesika predates modern quantum theory and relativistic theory by postulating that reality is to be viewed from the perspective of the observer.This book is both highly recommended because it explores areas not usually followed and presents ancient concepts in a modern light.

This analysis had not been done by Lincoln scholars before and it is just a sumptous read. I envy Prof. Foner's students at Columbia. I only learned about him by an appearance on Democracy Now. Foner has this wonderful gift of allowing for historical overview while getting right into the context of the times. The complexity is so astonishing, as of course, it always is, and as Foner notes, taking history's view often makes outcomes seem destined or inevitable. We consider that less than idealistic of him but consider too, nearly everyone in his cabinet that wanted to be president had mostly ruled themself out by their having taken stands for or against slavery, abolition, or this or that party. So Lincoln wound up with the job and then seemed the only one with a spine enough and a devotion enough to George Washington's vision and tribulations to withstand the great pressures for compromise with secession. Only Lincoln would not budge and what a horrible messy war it was.We cannot know what Lincoln would have done with Reconstruction but we do know what Andrew Johnson did. That's another Foner book.Foner's great gift as I see it is fidelity to the tapestry of the times. Foner has not himself as a teacher or author gotten lost in the mystique of Lincoln and that's not easy and I suppose he must have decided early that field was just too populated with scholarship.This is a great read even for those of us who've immersed in Burlingame and all the Lincoln scholars. Because it seems that Foner has been able to trace Lincoln's development and changes through time. Always the motives were mediative, never extreme. I would love to have seen Lincoln deal with Reconstruction and I feel certain he would have acknowledged the stresses on all parts and would have used martial law to prevent the abuses of the freedmen to give them time for education and self development. We did not get that. As I say, that's another book.

Any admirer of Lincoln and his contribution to the American story will be highly impressed and entertained by Mr. Foner's "Fiery Trial." Most books I have read on the subject tend to make the entire issue of slavery and the Civil War far more "black and white" then the story Mr. Foner so skillfully reveals. The almost limitless and constantly mutating variations between abolitionist and slaveholding racist are precisely depicted, making the story so vividly real and instructive.Equally compelling is the author's treatment of Lincoln as he grappled with the profound racial-political complexities that so gradually transformed his thinking; issues that were seemingly irreconcilable at the time and that remain profoundly vexing. In so doing, the author succeeds in achieving what the best historical storytelling can, making a granite-like American icon human despite his greatness.I would recommend this as a highly readable and eminently enlightening record of one of the most challenging periods in our history. It is especially relevant amidst the crippling and perplexing divisions we see in our country at present.

The Fiery Trial goes a long way into the growth in Abraham Lincoln's views over the course of the Civil War. It develops the changes that occurred, and the areas that did not change. The war itself brought about his understanding that slavery itself must be destroyed to achieve victory. The remarkable ability to see error in his own views and change those previous views is no doubt the single most remarkable element of Lincoln's greatness. The book at times becomes tedious in this analysis. But the language is clear and never pretentious. Glad I read it.

By focusing on Lincoln's thoughts about slavery and their evolution over time, Foner brings into clear view the many tangled issues and tormented arguments about slavery during the 30 years before and during the Civil War.. I never understood why Lincoln was considered a "moderate" on the subject of slavery, given that he freed the slaves. But after having read this book it is remarkably clear why he is considered a moderate. His views on slavery evolved dramatically, especially once the Civil War began. But even until the middle of 1862 he was still a moderate in favor of compensation for slave owners and resettlement of the freedmen to Central America. Only in late 1862 did he give up that idea and embrace emancipation as we know it. The story about how he got there is long and fascinating.This book won the Pulitzer Prize and deservedly so, in my opinion. Saying something new about Lincoln challenges even the best historian, but to make a breakthrough like this is remarkable. Foner's writes concisely and the narrative moves along briskly, with only a few patches where the book bogs down a bit. The many details crackle with meaning when put into vibrant contrasts by the author. Over and over again I found myself facing facts and ideas that were new to me, and I consider myself well versed in this subject. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Paul McClean grew up in Ireland where he attended the Dublin Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in architecture in 1994. During this time he traveled and worked for award-winning architectural practices in London, Dublin, and Sydney. After graduation he arrived in Southern California and worked for various local architectural firms before establishing McClean Design in 2000. McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and works primarily in California and Hawaii.Philip Jodidio was born in New Jersey in 1954. He studied art history and economics at Harvard before moving to Paris, where he was editor in chief of the French art monthly Connaissance des Arts from 1980 to 2002.
