I'm a self-acknowledged O'Reilly fan -- I normally think they do a great job of publishing great stuff for nerds like me. But I'm really, really glad I didn't pay for this book. It's 82 pages of high-level discussion of things that might be relevant to your data project but probably aren't.The subtitle is "Practical Techniques for Data Preparation" but that's a bald-faced lie. There's very little practical content in this book -- most of it is superficial and quite far from the day-to-day concerns that a data professional encounters. Most of what's in the book are things that are probably solved by default for you. "What kind of structure should I keep my data in?" Well, if you're using SQL, Excel, or any of the other bog-standard tools you're going to find on your work-issued computer, then surprise, the answer is tabular. Moreover, there's not nearly enough content to justify publishing this pamphlet. Things that I do a lot -- like combining multiple data sets -- got literally one page worth of discussion. Other things that I do a lot -- like wrestling with JSON vs CSV vs XLSX, etc -- aren't really touched on at all. This isn't even a mile wide and an inch deep; it's a foot wide and a millimeter deep. And the content that is there isn't always relevant. For unknown reasons, towards the end of the book, the authors devote 5 pages to explaining the differences between a data scientist and a data analyst, and what their roles are in the data ecosystem. Why? Couldn't tell you, because the distinction certainly isn't a "practical technique for data preparation."I do not recommend this book.

Brevity is the soul of wit, and doubly so the soul of good technical instruction. This is where this book flounders. This book feels like a powerpoint presentation gone inexplicably wrong. Its generic project management advice, with a thin veneer of "Data Wrangling" mixed in. It's a list of steps one should take in a data wrangling project without any real insight into what it takes to do them well. If you truly know nothing about Data Wrangling and have lacked all ambition and common sense up until this point, this may be the book for you.

"Principles of Data Wrangling: Practical Techniques for Data Preparation" by Tye Rattenbury, Joseph M. Hellerstein, Jeffrey Heer, Sean Kandel, and Connor Carreras comes in at a very lean 82 pages. While it does have some interesting points, there isn't a lot of new information contained within. It is definitely meant for professionals who specialize in the field which also means that the expectations are higher. I think it is worth a look but perhaps at a discounted price.

It's not clear what audience the authors were aiming towards - principles of data wrangling sound like something that a data scientist or an analyst would do...but every single one of them will know the information in this book (and more than that)! It's not a good "primer" for a manager, as it's too in the weeds and so much fluff that it wouldn't give a manager enough information. Can't recommend.

I gave this book 4 stars as it serves the function of brining together a number of, perhaps not-so-earth shattering, ideas into a framework, and concise summary. The brevity of the work can be seen as advantageous.I think the word "techniques" in the subtitle is extremely misleading - if you set your expectations of the book focused on the word "Principles" you won't feel mislead. As someone who has worked for the last 20 years in 'Data and Analytics' this book is a great read for the influx of software developers breaking into 'Data' given the current sexiness of "Big Data Science".I think the word "techniques" in the subtitle is extremely misleading - if you set your expectations of the book focused on the word "Principles" you won't feel mislead.

The book is very vague and simplistic. I agree with the other reviewers. There is a lot of fluff, and it's very short. I don't know for whom exactly this book was meant. I would not recommend.

I'm confused why this was published as a book. And the price of this book for 94 pages of not a lot of information that, quite frankly, seems kind of obvious. I think if you're trying to process large amounts of data you could do some Internet searches and get much of what you need.

What Happened, by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Review

“What Happened is not one book, but many. It is a candid and blackly funny account of her mood in the direct aftermath of losing to Donald J. Trump. It is a post-mortem, in which she is both coroner and corpse. It is a feminist manifesto. It is a score-settling jubilee…. It is worth reading.” —The New York Times“What Happened is a raw and bracing book, a guide to our political arena.” —The Washington Post“The writing in What Happened is engaging — Clinton is charming and even funny at times, without trying to paint herself in too flattering of a light…. Ultimately, the book might be a historical artifact most of all — the chronicling of what, exactly, it was like to run for president as the first woman major-party candidate (and, yes, a Clinton as well). Plenty may disagree with Clinton’s opinions on what went wrong for her, but her story will still be an important part of that history when America looks back on the melee that was the 2016 election.” —NPR“An engaging, beautifully synthesized page-turner.” —Slate“Here is Clinton at her most emotionally raw.... While What Happened records the perspective of a pioneer who beat an unprecedented path that stopped just shy of the White House, it also covers territory that many women will recognize.... She demonstrates that she can mine her situation for humor.”      —People“What Happened is not a standard work of this genre. It’s interesting; it’s worth reading; and it sets out questions that the press, in particular, has not done enough to face.” —The Atlantic“Engaging... witty, and useful.” —The New York Review of Books“A disturbing autopsy on the state of America today. What Happened is an urgent plea directed not only to those concerned about America’s capacity to survive, but also to all who are anxious about protecting America’s international contributions to human health.” —The Lancet“This is an important book, and anyone who’s worried by what happened last November 8 should pick it up.” —Entertainment Weekly“Contains... insights into Ms. Clinton’s personality, character, and values, and the challenges confronting women in politics.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It's a pity party for Hillary. She should have kept her internal thoughts to herself.I liked her before I started reading this.

What happened to Hillary Rodham Clinton is much like what happened with this book. Nothing. A woman in politics thinks she is going to be president and loses. This is her talking to herself and cleaning house to keep the pain of defeat at bay. Just my opinion. Another book bites the dust. Will anyone care in 20 years about this book?

Hillary’s sour grape lamenting and self righteous rhetoric saturated every page of this book. While she did admit her share of mistakes on the campaign trail she seems to be much more interested in taking jabs at her opponent and implying that she was the only choice.....so what happened? I still don’t know.Understandably losing something you strived for so desperately is crushing and I felt bad for her. I really believe she thought there was no way she would lose to someone like Donald Trump. She didn’t see defeat barreling toward her, didn’t realize no one trusted her, didn’t step outside her haughty brilliance to notice the large crowds at Trump rallies, nor did she seem to catch on that though the tone of Trump’s delivery was harsh vernacular, he was saying what many were thinking. But it’s all over now. You lost. you’ve had your whine. Get over yourself and move on.Oh, and Hillary,I wouldn’t bring up that lying thing...Clinton’s should not throw stones in that direction.

Reading through reviews on this page, I don’t think half of the people writing even read the book. Hillary does NOT claim her campaign was perfect, she does NOT say she was the perfect candidate, and she does NOT place the blame on others for her loss. Rather, she clearly admits when and how mistakes were made, how she earnestly sought to understand the needs and desires of ALL Americans, and how she continuously revisits campaign moments, wondering how she could have done it differently. This is an honest, touching, and well-written memoir of a woman who put it all on the line for her country. Great read and would recommend 100%.

I wanted to hear her side of what happened not her tell how great her campaign was, how her positions were the best, how she would have been the better President. It would have been a better read had she won.

That was a painful read. Instead of a book I can't put down, it was a book I couldn't pick up. It took me a month to read it. I was expecting an inside look at the campaign: what worked, what didn't, strategies and the reasonings behind them, internal battles, successes and failures. This book has none of that. Instead it is a book of:* Democrat talking points* I love my daughter and my mother and my grandkids. They are so wonderful. Oh, and my dad too, I guess. And Bill's really an OK guy.* Everyone else is a jerk: Donald, Bernie, Comey, the FBI, the Russians, the Republicans, the media, white women--make that any woman who didn't vote for me because, well, you know, because I'm a woman.* People who voted for Trump really are deplorable. No seriously, I mean it. Geesh, Trump groped a woman. That makes people who support him deplorable, doesn't it?* I wanted to talk about issues but everyone else wanted to talk about how incompetent I am with email. There was so much in this book that had nothing to do with "What Happened" and so little to do with what actually did happen. The way she blamed everyone else, a better title would have been, "The Buck Starts Here".

If you want to know what Hillary wants you to think happened during the 2016 Election, this could be the book for you. If you want Hillary to have a few more bucks, this is you book. If you want a copy of "What Happened " from Goodwill or Salvation Army. At least the money will go to a real charity.

I voted for HRC. I bought the book. I read the book. The two-star review represents what I genuinely think about it.A good 75% of the book has nothing to do with "what happened." Most of the book is HRC telling about her political career, her wonderful family, her mother, her wonderful life with Bill, how much she cares about people, especially children, her wonderful, hard-working staff, etc. This is fine but it's a lot to wade through to get to the meat of the book, and once you get to the meat, it's a pretty cheap cut.HRC lays out a good case against FBI Director James Comey and against Russian "fake news" items that saturated social media and against the media for fixating on the non-scandal of her emails while ignoring her policies and plans for America. I came away from the book with a finer understanding of how these forces worked against her. She also has choice words for her opponent in the primary, Sen. Bernie Sanders, whom she believes "gave ammunition" to Trump. She was less convincing on this front as virtually nothing Sanders said against HRC during the primary battle was new; his criticisms of HRC were general talking points before Sanders ever entered the contest. The book whitewashes the DNC's actions against Sanders during the primary, actions that turned a good number of Sanders supporters (HRC continues use of the odious "Bernie Bros." epithet) against her. She blames Russian leaks of DNC emails for Debra Wasserman Shultz's departure but makes no mention of what was IN those emails that was so incriminating. HRC praises the hard work of Donna Brazile but fails to mention how Brazile was caught stealing debate questions (for the debate with Sanders) from CNN and then leaking those questions to HRC and not to Sanders.HRC skims over her failure to deliver a simple, inspirational vision for America as Trump did for his supporters and as Sanders did for his. She talks of her many policies and issue statements and acknowledges that such things aren't as catchy for voters as Trump's and Sanders' rhetoric. This statement is literally one sentence long, and yet it reveals the main reason her campaign failed: She does not know how to inspire people to vote for her. She's proud of her campaign slogan, "Stronger Together," without recognizing how flat it falls compared with Trump's "Make America Great Again." She talks of a program she and Bill worked out to share investment income with all Americans, the way Alaska shares oil revenue with its citizens, and calls it "Alaska for Americans." My god, what a horrible name! But she doesn't see it. She's tone deaf when it comes to language. She's also blind to the issue of optics. She acknowledges that her highly-paid and secretive speeches to Wall Street firms "looked bad," but she far underestimates just how negatively those speeches affected her image. She speaks in the book proudly of the designers she has designing her clothing, but seems oblivious to the way those very same clothes impact the unemployed formerly-working class people she admits to wooing unsuccessfully. There is no doubt but that big forces worked against Hillary Clinton's candidacy, but major forces opposed Trump, also. What is telling in HRC's memoir and analysis are her own blind spots, her weakness as a campaigner who fails to inspire, her over-reliance on her status as "first female Presidential nominee from a major party" (53% of white women voted for Trump, but HRC doesn't examine why), and her refusal to acknowledge how the DNC, during the primary, alienated the progressive voters she would later need to win the general election. (Even here, though, we have figures now indicating that 12% of Sanders supporters went over to Trump, whereas in 2008, after HRC lost the primary to Obama, 24% of her supporters went over to McCain. In other words, Sanders supporters were still more supportive of HRC than HRC's supporters were of Obama by 2-to-1.)So around and around we go. Some reviews state that HRC blames everyone but herself for her loss. I think this statement is a bit strong, but certainly she turns her back, at least in this book, to enough of her own failings and those of the DNC to earn the criticism. So there is my review of "What Happened," as a Democrat, as someone who voted for Hillary Clinton, as someone who bought the book from Amazon and read every word.

#138,672 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have not actually completed this book, and it probably improves after the introduction and first section, but I read the first book and got really annoyed at the cliches about Afghanistan and how the author explained the people through Western metaphors, so I stopped reading and bought a history of Afghanistan by an Afghan. Therefore, I either recommend not reading this book, or if according to knowledgeable reviewers it gets better, then I recommend skipping forward to wherever it gets better. Overall, though, I think Afghanistan is one of those countries which outsiders have historically misunderstood even when they try to understand, so in the case of this country I think it’s best to start out with a history of Afghanistan by an Afghan. Also, I didn’t get the feeling from the bit that I read that this was a university style scholarly book so it wouldn’t be much use as a reference either.

Barfield brings an extremely useful combination of skills to bear on his explanation of Afghanistan. In his concise account of Afghani history over the last few centuries he draws on the ability of the social anthropologist to give us the whys of belief, behaviour and process that help us understand the whats of events. He also has the refreshing ability to draw on the whole range of sources in these explanations, including specifically Islamic analyses. One of the best things about this book is the way it avoids the convenient-thinking trap of "eternal Afghanistan": the author can draw sharp distinctions between elements of vigorous continuity in Afghani history and culture, and elements of dramatic and irreversible change. For students of Afghanistan as The Graveyard Of Imperial Ambition, I would rank this as one of the two most useful books to read, the other being Gen. Skeen's 1932 "Lessons In Imperial Rule", a cheerfully brisk booots-on-the-ground military analysis of why military invaders were inevitably bound for grief.

This is the best book if you really want to understand what happened in Afghanistan. This starts with very ancient history and works towards the more modern. He does a great job of delivering a ton of information in a concise and easy to read way. Yes, this book is academic. This is a serious book on a serious subject. It isn't designed for a housewife to read on the beach. If you're really interested in learning about Afghanistan you will need this book. He knocks it out of the park.

After reading this book, I feel that I have a much better understanding of Afghanistan, especially of the way the past explains the present. The author writes without frills and is not, for example, William Dalrymple (I strongly recommend "Return of a king", about the first contacts between Europe and Afghanistan), but he clearly knows the country very well and is quite convincing.I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because, in my opinion, the "cultural" of the title is quite weak compared to the "political". This is a pity because the author condemns the attempts to impose western cultural values on the local populations. I think he's right, but this issue could have been better developed.

Fascinating read. Many times you wonder about the countries that we hear about in the news and to completely understand the back-story it is important to pick up a book like this one.To call Afghanistan backward would be improper; to call them out of date would be accurate. The author takes is through the turmoil that the country has dealt with for nearly 3 centuries. The conquers and those that the people defeated. In the end you come out with a deep respect for these people but wonder what is the best course of action to take. Should the US support this country with troops and financial aid or would it be best to back out and allow the country to do what it has always done. The author makes the process much more convoluted when he clearly shows his bias against President Bush near the end of the book. He clearly does not appreciate the near complete withdrawal of troops after the defeat of the Taliban but then makes it clear that the problems that have arisen in the aftermath are issues that only Afghanistan can correct...so which is it?The fact that this country has so much potential and growth makes it a country to continue to watch for years to come.

A must read for any soldier or statesmen serving in AFGHANISTAN. An incredible historical account that puts all my observations in perspective. Young politically ambitious Afghans should read this book. It does not have the answers but certainly provides sound and logical advice. I personally knew that the rural Afghan seeks greater autonomy in his daily affairs and how actions by GIRoA to govern this rural constituency were counter productive. Still a tough problem, but this book offers not only suggestions, but much hope for the future. WELL DONE!!!!

Afghanistan is a notoriously complex country with a notoriously complex history. Barfield has done a fantastic job of presenting a balanced overview of its history. At times, my head spun as I tried to keep the long cast of characters straight, but when I finished I felt like I had a better grasp on Afghanistan than when I started. If I had to make a light criticism, I would say that the first half of the book is a bit tougher to read because it deals in demographics and geography. It reminded me a bit of of the early sections of Louis Dupree's book, Afghanistan. The book's biggest strength is the history of Afghanistan since 1901. (I felt like it was the most relevant part to understanding the US effort there.) Since 1901, every Afghan leader has been either killed or exiled. I thought that was a striking piece of information given the US's contentious relationship with President Karzai.I give the book five starts and a must read for anyone interested in the US effort in Afghanistan. For people who follow Afghanistan very closely, some of it will be a review, but I suspect Afghan watchers of all levels of expertise will benefit from reading this book.

Review

'[An] excellent book…[Norton's] first concern… is to trace the decline of patriarchy; the growth of free choice of a spouse; the rise of marital equality…the greater equality in educational attainments; the more intense concern of parents for the proper education of children; the greater permissiveness in child-rearing; and the increased cooperation between spouses in birth control…[Her] fascinating documentation, drawn from a vast range of manuscript sources, establishes the facts beyond any reasonable doubt…Norton suggests that the change resulted from… two factors. The first was the practical experience of women during the long years of revolutionary upheaval…The second…was the impact of egalitarian and republican ideology." ~Lawrence Stone, New York Times Book Review

I haven't read this yet, but I got it as a gift for my mother after reading another book by Norton "Devil's Snare." Norton is on track to be the president of the American Historical Association in 2018, and her work is reflective of her expertise

Not what I expected will probably resale

From the Edenton Tea Party to the benefits of an academy education, this book portrays the transformation of women's lives during the period known as the Revolution. Within these pages women's history is covered along with personal experiences. Through the women's diaries and letters from the 1770's through the 1790's you hear the real voices of the women and their thoughts on politics, war, post war and their education.

This book gave me some great information on women during that time period. I'm a member of DAR and I felt this book was well-written and researched.

Liberty's Daughters is really the combined collection of two books. Part I: The Constant Patterns of Women's Lives, sets the reader up for Part II: The Changing Patterns of Women's Lives. In a way, Part I explains the life of the prewar colonial woman. Part II discusses the changes that would occur for women during and immediately following the war. Norton makes a convincing argument that women's lives were forever changed by the Revolutionary War. Chapter 1 was extremely interesting as Norton details the differences between rural women of the colonies with urban women. She details the lives of rural women of the North in comparison to women of the rural South. Plus, Norton discusses the even harsher life of the female slave. In a way, there is an underlying sentiment that life was very difficult for both men and women during this period of time. I appreciated Norton's realization that men also experienced plenty of toil during this time in history. In other words, there was plenty of hardship to go around. One main theme that the reader quickly notices is how important spinning was to the women of colonial America. The first chapters detail how women would have to spin to make clothes for themselves and their families (and sometimes very large families). To pass the time, women would often spin in groups. This activity gave them a sense of companionship. This community would lay the important groundwork for their support of the men during the Revolutionary War. The second part of the book informs the reader how women formed formal spinning groups that actively worked to help the patriots. In a way, women now took up spinning as a part of the campaign for freedom against the British. Sewing gave women a sense of nationality as they could actively contribute to the defense of colonial liberties. Norton explains in the first chapters how women needed a certain degree of conversation. Women loved to talk, most particularly while they spun. In Part II, Norton explains how politics is all anyone could talk about during this era, so why would women want to be left out? Indeed, they were not left out of the conversation, and they were even more than willing to take part in the action. After all, it was their families who were at stake. Women actively took part in the mobs and spoke out against loyalists - partially to avoid from themselves becoming targets of the patriotic fever that swept much of the colonies. Just as in any other civil war, not all women agreed. Political differences caused breakups and differences in friendships and marriages. Though we read from other sources that Washington held contempt for the women who traveled with his army - taking precious rations and supplies, Washington also displays his gratitude to Ester Reed and her girls for this organization's contributions. He put these girls, "to an equal place with any who have preceded them in the walk of female patriotism." The significant sign of change in the lives of colonial women is found midway through Part 2 when the postwar female generation led political discussion and even took part in activism. This was completely alien to most women born before 1760. Nineteenth-century women took pride in the contributions that members of their sex had made to the winning of independence. The existence of such public-spirited models showed that women could take active roles in politics without losing their feminine identity. It was not by chance that in 1848 the organizers chose to use the Declaration of Independence as the basis for their calls for reform in women's status. They understood the relevance of the revolutionary era to their own endeavors. This is a far cry to the woman detailed in Chapter 1 who had no idea about even the financial state of her husband. Here is another profound change from Chapter 1: As time went on, women learned more about the family's finances while at the same time their husband's knowledge became increasingly outdated and remote. In a way, the soldiers increasingly delegated responsibility of the finances to their wives. Women received freedom from the British - just as did men. However, women also gained certain freedoms for their gender. Following the war, female children consequently began to expect the right to decide for themselves in marital matters if they so desired. Many girls continued to seek their parents' and friends' assessments of potential spouses. However, some women made up their own minds, and this is a revolutionary concept. After all, even today in some countries, women have yet to acquire this freedom. Not only were they given more choice in who they were to marry, the increasing use of contraception in the last two decades of the century can also be seen as a reflection of women's improved status within marriage. This came as quite a surprise to me as I had not been aware of any such methods of contraception at this early period of time. I had always assumed that people of this era had only one method of contraception: do not do anything! After the war, women grew increasingly willing to challenge the conventional wisdom about feminine faults. Women finally stood up against the arguments about their nature - particularly against negative aspects of their nature. They were less inclined to allow remarks about their "natural state" pass without harsh comment. This is, in my opinion, the true birth of a P.C. culture! Norton's argument is successful. The lives of women were forever altered by the Revolutionary War. Further, women had just begun to seek liberties for their own gesture. In a way, this book should be read before one begins to study and attempt to understand the feminist movement of the 1840's, before the Suffrage movement that gained women's right to vote, and before the feminist movement that would begin in the 1960's. Indeed, we still live with the consequences of the changes in women's society during the Revolutionary War.

3.5 to 4 starsSecond read, full review:I am a little torn about this book. It is why I had to read it twice, back-to-back, in order to clarify my thoughts for this review. And I am not honestly sure that I have managed to do that, even now.Unfortunately, I think DON'T CHEAT ME suffered a little from the dreaded sophomore slump. Not actually surprising for a new author team. What was more surprising was the impressive nature of their debut novel, DON'T RUSH ME. I will talk a bit shortly about what concerned me in this effort.First, I need to say that I still absolutely love the Nora Jacobs series, and I have every expectation that Book 3 will return to the quality of DON'T RUSH ME. I think (and hope) that some of the problems I had in this book are now resolved and the third book will show a lot more forward progress, inclusion of all characters, and exciting action. This is a world, and a group of characters, that I simply like . Immersing myself in their world makes me happy . Ultimately, despite any perceived flaws, that means I enjoy reading the book. Being able to escape so comprehensively into a world that feels good is all any reader can ask for. That said, when I analyze the book from a technical standpoint, a number of problems leap out at me. Yes, they were mostly there in DON'T RUSH ME as well, but they were much more easily overlooked. In DON'T CHEAT ME, these flaws became more significant issues. For me, they did not overly inhibit my enjoyment, but I know they were major issues for a number of other readers. The single most egregious problem - Nora "Mary Sue" Jacobs is a seriously super special snowflake. Possibly even in danger of becoming a whole snowman (snow-woman?).- She seems to be good at anything she puts her hand to- Every man immediately become her obsessive stalker- Is unbelievably powerful, grows more so every damn day(I just happen to have a much greater tolerance for "Special Snowflake Mary Sues" than others do. I want my heroines to be special, and I can forgive an author going too far much more easily than I can a lot of other book faults.)And on top of this, Nora suffers from a lot of the current RH/PNR heroine tropes that are sadly becoming cliched stereotypes. She has been horribly abused for pretty much her entire life.- Witnesses her mother's gang rape and murder at 6- Abused/raped as a foster child in multiple homes- Assaulted/raped in park then rescued by Ollie- Raped by her BF when she trusted him by kissing him- Repeated stalked/obsessed over daily basis ever sinceAnd yet, she is so strong that she has mostly overcome all of this and is a very dominant woman? Okaaay. Her only lingering issues from all this trauma seem to be:- constant worry that no one really likes her for her; it's only a result of her "curse"- occasional panic attacks in more sexual situations- flinching when being touched (though this is as much about her mind-reading)So maybe a wee bit unrealistic on the PTSD recovery front. But at least the authors have made a concerted effort to acknowledge it, and they do a good job of having Nora work through many of these issues by the end of DON'T CHEAT ME.However, who the flurk designed Nora's new look? It kind of felt like maybe their daughter did, because the happy-happy-rainbows-and-unicorn-farts look was over-the-top for me. And did not feel like it fit the tenor of this series. At all.Overall, I think those were the largest potential problems in the book. The only other ones I noticed were less egregious:- Continuity issues, which are easily resolved with an edit (see Update Notes below)- Far too abrupt a wrap-up of the story - the last 10% should have been 30-50 pages longerOn the harem front, we still do not have any real resolutions, but a great deal of progress has been made. I was able to see where it should be headed in book 3. But this is a very slow-burn RH. We have only had a couple of fairly chaste kisses and a very little sexual tension. But things are looking up for the next book!Rook was a wonderful addition to the Nora Jacobs series. I quite like his character (I do love a possessive, dominant-but-caring, alpha male werewolf), though I hope this doesn't mean the end of Wulf as a possible love interest. I did think this story focused FAR too much on the werewolves and the Huron River pack. I missed Terrance. We did not get a single scene, that I recall, with him at their home, and very few with him in them at all. And even when he was there, it was just as an addition to a bunch of other characters. Booo!I still love Nick Gorgeous. And I missed spending more time with him as well. He was more involved than T was, due to FUA involvement, but I would have loved more. There was plenty of Parker and Oliver - though maybe I only feel that way because neither are my favorite characters yet. Parker is still a little too stalker-ish, and Oliver is still a little too passive/submissive/weak for me. But I see the potential for both of them.I would really like to see more female interactions for Nora. Her only remaining female friend is Cecile, though they don't seem to spend much time together that isn't about fashion and party-planning. I think the relationship works well, because it is symbiotic - Cecile can skim the lust off all the men attracted to Nora (which is pretty much any man she meets it seems), so there is unlikely to be any jealousy issues. I could see that being a problem with other women, unless they are in a happily committed relationship themselves. But I miss Maya. I liked her!All in all, I still adore this series, but there are some issues for Jackie May to deal with if I am going to fully buy in for the long haul. Can't wait to see how they handle book 3!First blush thoughts on first read, but couldn't clarify enough for a review:Umm... somewhere in the 4-5 star range, but I am not sure I can process my feelings about all this yet. Sitting here rather stunned. An awful lot happened in a short period of time.Still love the series, because I really am growing to love a lot of these characters.Review to come... after a re-read I think.UPDATE PREVIEW NOTESRead #2:98.0% "Wrong pack! Axel was the alpha of the Island Lake pack. Continuity issue. (Plus the typo saying Warterloo)"89.0% "*sigh* I am not a huge fan of the werewolf mating habits in this series. That there is not necessarily love involved, just some biological imperative for the shifter's wolf to find the most dominant female. And even more, that others can challenge that mate for the right to take over? Blech!"50.0% "Note: Rook's deceased wife's name was Lily early on, and Lilly later in the book. Continuity error."Read #1:95.0% "Yep, SO totally called that... and that..."90.0% "Argh...90% and that tension and stress I haven't been feeling in this book is suddenly there. So much for the happy feels! :/"78.0% "Yay Ollie! Good for you :)"71.0% "Oh so awesome scene!! *giddy*"63.0% "OMFG. I detest Henry. So much for any idea of redemption.(And why do I have the strangest sense of deja vu as I have been reading the last 25%? It is eerie.)"53.0% "*gasp* OMG... getting good!"52.0% "LOL Loved that scene! Knew that, or something like it, was coming at some point :)"49.0% "Uh...6'2" 185lb man is NOT large. I thought Wulf and Rook were big guys?"34.0% "I like this...the Luna for the Alpha's mate. Nice lunar/moon references there."20.0% "*grumble*"18.0% "And ARGH! I am not sure I like this turn of events :( Certainly a twist I wasn't expecting."18.0% "Okay, it is a bit of a ridiculous claim for Wulf to say that if he can't train Nora at the pack gym, the only other option is his place in private. They could work at the club after hours. They could work at Terrance's. Hell I am sure there is a gym or something in town they could use. Or even at his place with T or someone there too. Plenty of options."7.0% "If you wanted to know how to defend yourself so badly, Nora, why didn't you take classes? There are even free offerings at women's shelters and such."3.0% "Best line ever, and a great sentiment!"I’m all for being a strong woman, but I’ll never turn down a knight in shining armor, either."2.0% "Oh, okay! That works too. I am okay with that...AND she gets more time with T...And Wulf. yum!"1.0% "Uh... what happened to FUA? I assumed she be working there and had lost the mechanic's job."

No spoilers this time!! *Freaking Happy Dance* I screamed *expletive* when I realized this second book was out! I was really hoping Nora didn't pick Rook because I wanted him! Book boyfriend! I wanna be pet/bathed also! *sigh* I'm going to be so angry when this series ends because you just get lost in the story! Non stop reading, I didn't even know I was close to the last page until it ended and I threw out some more colorful words! Book two is just as great as book one. You will not be disappointed. Just grab it you guys, you know you want it! Jackie May duo strikes again!

After being attacked several times, it's time for Nora to get some self defense training. With her supernatural allure (or curse as she calls it) to the male species, that makes it hard for her to find someone to train her that she can trust. With some help from her new friends she is able to find that help as well as gain a new "case" in helping the local werewolf pack by using her more psychic abilities.I'm so happy with how much I'm enjoying this series. The writing and word/character building is truly hitting the mark for me. I love Nora, I love the men surrounding her, and I greedily wish there was more to read of it right now. It was mentioned by the authors on their fan site that they only plan about 4 books for this series, by I truly hope they are struck by inspiration to be able to write more than that. I know some other series's that honestly get stale and run too long, it does happen and good authors don't want that. But there is so much potential in this urban supernatural universe I honestly can't imagine that happening with this series if it was possibly drawn out to 6-10 books. Of course, I'm not the author so I don't know their plan for the direction of the series, so it's just my opinion. Fingers crossed I get my way though, cuz like I said, this series makes me greedy for more.

After absolutely loving the first book in this series, I was shocked to discover that another book had come out and I had yet to pick it up! I remedied this by making it my very last book read in 2018. This book didn’t disappoint and left me smiling and eager for more.Nora is newly introduced to the paranormal world and has been accepted or hated in pretty much equal parts. She’s a bit of a mystery in the powers department, so even her allies don’t know what to expect from her as she develops. One thing is for sure, though, she’s drawing men to her with some form of her magic. After yet another attack, this time of the vampire variety, it’s decided that maybe she should learn to defend herself. Her werewolf bartender coworker ends up taking her to his old werewolf pack’s gym for some lessons, only to introduce and promptly dump her on his brother. This new character, Rook, was a nice addition to the already growing number of paranormal characters. Since he lives on pack territory, the majority of the action this time revolves around werewolf drama. The alpha of the pack engages Nora’s abilities to help with a few things, all of which get her in hot water. Even by hanging around the pack’s most eligible bachelor gets her in trouble. She is certainly living up to her troll-given nickname in this one.I said the last one was lacking a little bit in the romance department but this book was all about the gigantic love mess going on with Nora. She’s just adding to her list of potential boyfriends with each turn of the page and I know it will eventually come to blows or possibly some big (or bigger than before) murder plot to take out some competition. This book does give you some resolution, however, about what exactly Nora is and I was dumbfounded that I hadn’t put it together on my own. While this was not necessarily the same feel as the first book, I still love all these yummy characters and am eager to get the next book in the series.
