This is a great book! I read it for a counseling class and then taught through it in the teen Sunday School class at my church. The book is very winsome, readable, and convicting. I especially appreciated Bigney's repeated reminder to focus on Christ and the gospel. As he puts it in chp. 2:"Don't obsess over your heart while ignoring your Savior. Watch out! As you discover your idols, and God turns the floodlight onto the filth of your heart, you WILL be discouraged, so you'd better look to Christ! Read the Gospels again. Study the account of the cross. Go to Galatians and read about grace, not law. Preach the gospel to yourself every day. Delight in your Savior. Glance at your heart, but gaze at Christ. Keep the main thing the main thing.Christ, the cross, the gospel-- these are the main thing. So let whatever God chooses to do in your life be an occasion for you to draw nearer to your Savior than you have ever been, so that you'll be able to say, 'That's why I need the gospel. That's why Christ died on the cross. That's why I need grace. That's why the law could never have saved me. Thank you, God, that according to Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."' Stay at the cross as God performs his surgery in you."I so appreciate this book especially because of the author's humility, transparency, ruthlessness with sin, and ultimately his audacious confidence in the hope and joy of the gospel.My only criticism is that the book is about 60 pages longer than necessary (hence the four stars). Many of the chapters overlapped with each other extensively. Sometimes the repetition was helpful, but often it was burdensome. I condensed this thirteen chapter book into seven lessons for my class which was plenty of time to cover the book's most helpful content.

I never thought of myself as an idol worshipper since I don't bow down to carved images of beasts or birds. Brad Bigney opened my eyes to see that idols are everywhere and my heart cranks out idols all the time. Thank you for publishing this book. It made a difference in my life. I pray that God will continue to help me smash the idols of my heart and that He will never cease to "search me to see if there is any wicked way in me." God bless!

When I first started attending biblical counseling conferences, it didnâ€™t take long to realize why Brad Bigneyâ€™s teaching sessions were always packed out â€“ because he has a way of communicating that leaves you edified, energized and eager to pursue the Lord with everything youâ€™ve got. It came as no surprise, then, to see that Gospel Treason is jam-packed with help for eradicating the root cause of so many of our struggles: the idols in our hearts. Thankfully, Brad doesnâ€™t leave us gazing at our navels in self-condemnation, but faithfully points us to the gospel in a way that lights the way of escape. One particularly powerful quote is going on the fridge today: â€œWhose yoke are you wearing right now? Is it a good fit? Has sin deceived you? Is the thing you thought would lead to joy and freedom turning into a prison of your own making? That can all end today. Jesus is calling. Heâ€™s ready to shatter the yoke of idolatrous sin in your life, and to take the yoke with you in a way that fits like nothing else. Donâ€™t you want that?â€Yes, I do indeed. I plan to read Gospel Treason multiple times and to recommend it to friends and counselees.

Honestly, I bought this book because of the reviews, but didn't pick it up for a few months because of the title and cover. It just didn't connect with me! But, I kept seeing it referred to by authors I respect, so I finally picked it up and read it. I am so glad I did! I've been very blessed by hearing the author teach at conferences and this book didn't disappoint at all. It is quite engaging, insightful, and full of truth about the nature of the human heart yet it is also filled with compassion for the pain of life. But most importantly, this book is a powerful tool that God can use to transform lives. As a counselor and a teacher, I have now taken many people through Gospel Treason. At times it is hard to read simply because the author exposes our hearts with great clarity - but that is our best hope for change. Gratefully,. he doesn't leave us there. Throughout the book he reminds us of the powerful love and grace of Christ, urging readers to gaze on the beauty of Christ's love more than on the struggles in their hearts. Through the study of this book, each person (including me!) has become more like Christ and with greater joy, better relationships, and a more stable walk. In my opinion, this book will become a staple, one of the foundational books in the realm of soul care. Get it! If you are serious about honoring Christ and finding true joy, you won't be disappointed!

This book is a thorough review of the temptations, dangers, and consequences of idolatry in the heart. Although the book surprisingly did not give an account of the origins of the word â€œidolatryâ€ or how Old Testament idolatry relates to how we talk about idolatry today, it nonetheless has a lot of helpful things to say about how the human heart constantly elevates things or people above God and looks for satisfaction in them.I found most helpful the stories of people who had been caught up with subtle idols which â€œflew below the radarâ€ for some time, and were only retrospectively diagnosed as idolatry. For example, the author recounted his own idol of respect from his parishioners, while his wife battled disappointment over her unsatisfied idolatry of the perfect home. It was eye-opening to hear how their respective idols clashed to the detriment of their marriage. Only after they saw their idols as such were they able to plot a course for recovery.As the author demonstrated, one often doesnâ€™t detect his or her idols until they go unsatisfied. But the stories mentioned above showed me that conflict is an opportunity to examine oneâ€™s idols and do some "idol-hunting" in one's life.

I think this book would be more helpful to therapists, who would be forced to deal with people like this for thier job. Not to say it isn't helpful to the average person, just that it is tailored more towards people who can't avoid Covertly Agressive people.Your best bet is to try and stay away from people like this if you can. I realize sometimes you can'tThings I found useful in this book:A: Illistrating different people, in a lot of peoples lives and how they express covertly aggresive behavior, or probably are just inherently covertly aggessive by nature. I do like the message about children and now if you don't correct thier behavior they seem to become little sociopaths. I think we all now I child like described in the book.B: I do find it useful that dealing with a covertly aggresive personality type or sociopath, that it is best to try and come up with a win win scenario for them. However I know, that sometimes, with some people, they will never be happy.This is a decent book, although a litle dry for me. Some people may like it better than others I have read. It reads a little more like a text book.

A covert narcissist worked in my office for awhile. If you are not the narcissist, this can be a job- or career-killer for you, as they will try to kill your hopes and dreams and livelihood. They won't kill you physically but they will drain you of everything positive. It was a scary time. Thankfully my office wised up to the problem and he was fired. Meanwhile 13 months of working with him were the worst of the 25 years of my career.Books like this help you understand. And I think "understanding" is unfortunately about the best you can do. I found learning about the narcissist personality and tactics they will inflict on you help you to build armor around yourself. They will make you think YOU are the problem. You have to be strong and know that you are not the problem. Knowing their modus operandi helps you to counteract it. For example, don't fall for the gaslighting, consciously recognize when it's happening so you can protect yourself.I'm not sure anything can help you solve the problem. Every bit of advice I found said "non-communication" is the only solution. That's hard to do when the narc is a colleague on a small team and you MUST communicate. I found these helped me:-- Do not meet with the narc without someone else present. EVER. Because everything said will get twisted by the narc and make you look bad. You need someone else (a non-narc and a non-friend of the narc) so someone else can corroborate your side of the story. Believe me if you don't want your professional reputation ruined, DO NOT EVER MEET ALONE with a true narcissist. ESPECIALLY a covert narcissist. Also the narcissist will say negative things and use body language (eye rolls, scrunched up face) that may likely make you emotionally upset. Getting upset and recovering from it is very distracting when you have work to do. This treatment might be less likely to happen if there's someone else in the meeting who is your ally and not the narc's ally. And if the behavior does happen, someone else can corroborate your description of what happened. My workplace has a team environment, so it was easy in our culture to be sure someone else was always at meetings with our "office narc." Usually several people are working on a project together. If you don't have a team environment, you may have an office best friend who might be willing to help you by sitting in on meetings with you.-- Definitely do not ever meet behind a closed door with only you and the narcissist. Keep that door open, especially when there's people working outside the door who can overhear. You want them to overhear. If you meet with the narc alone, everything will get twisted, it's your word against theirs, and if you are not also a wolf, they will make you look bad. They're better at that game than you are. Keep the office or meeting room door open. If the narc wants to close a door, tell a white lie like the temperature isn't comfortable, you need air (who would argue with that?) etc. If the narc closes the door, get up and open the door again while saying this. It's not likely they will try to close the door again, unless they really are ridiculous. And yeah I think it's ridiculous that you have to get into games like this, but this is the destruction of reasonableness by narcissists.-- Instead of talking, communicate through email. You will have documentation of every instruction you give (that typically isn't followed, understood or it's argued with unprofessionally). And you will have documentation of every word the narcissist writes to you. You will likely see some really unprofessional behavior come from the narcissist. They can't help themselves. You will then have this documented. You want this. Usually they are so full of themselves that they will be unable to see that what they wrote is unprofessional. They will try to frame you as unprofessional. But you will have it in writing, in black and white, and any reasonable boss or HR rep will be able to see the truth. I did this and it helped other people see the true nature of the communications between me and our workplace narcissist. I can't emphasize the importance of this enough. DOCUMENT. Try to not discuss important things verbally. When things go wrong, it will become them vs you and you will have no documentation if communications are verbal.-- They may figure out what you're doing and accuse you of not talking to them. Our workplace narcissist did this to me. I responded very frankly (because the person's boss and a VP were in the meeting where we discussed my non-communication) that I had to communicate by email because when I didn't, the narcissist forgot things or didn't follow things. And they seemed to do better when instructions were given in email. And, to be honest, I wanted to create a papertrail about this. You can call it exactly what it is first, so they can't blame you for making a papertrail. There is nothing wrong with papertrails. Many office procedures are specifically designed to build papertrails. Our workplace narcissist's problem with following instructions was known to many. I stated a fact, I didn't get emotional in response to hist attack, and actually he admitted he had a problem remembering things and following instructions and he would try to do better. So ... know that you may get attacked for following these steps. Be prepared to defend yourself with a rational explanation. Documentation and papertrails are very rational and appropriate for the workplace.-- If the narc is your boss, look for another job. I'm sorry but having dealt with this personality, that is your only option to save yourself, your career reputation, and your livelihood. Wise up to it fast. It hurts but the situation won't change. Face reality and take the actions you need to get out.-- If you want to attack the narc, be prepared for their attack back at you, and be prepared that they will be very good at what they do when they attack you. They may attack you behind your back and you won't see it coming. This is why I recommend DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT.-- Have good people in your personal life who can help support you. Focus on building and maintaining your good reputation at work with others. Get professional counseling if you must. You need to protect yourself. Work out your frustrations with exercise, try not to use too much alcohol or reality TV shows. :) I admit I wasn't so great at this last bit of advice -- bad TV is so good!! :)This review went way beyond the book - but this was what worked to help me, and I expect you are here because you're having a problem. My advice relates to workplace narcissists because I haven't yet run into one in my personal life. I hope my advice helps you! I wish all the best for you!

Cats never come right out and pounce on their prey; there's always the "lead up" time where they just take it all in and STUDY their victims. This is PRECISELY what covert-aggressives do for a living with flattery, baby-talk, no conscience, no accountability, "poor me" and "I had no idea" all rolled into one hugely dysfunctional (and damaging - to YOU) burrito.THIS is the new "evil." I bought this book because we have often visited the Larz Anderson Park in Brookline and I was curious about the backstory.I very much enjoyed the mix of interesting stories and academic detail. Moskey has done a very nice job of gathering together the story of this wealthy couple from a previous age, that has been disappearing over time. I guess a moral to their story is if you are going to leave no great works and no children then be prepared for the memory to fade. They were somewhat like a US version of Downton Abbey where they spent their time managing their estates, travelling and dallying with the real world when it met with their convenience.I was most interested in reading about some of their interconnections with other famous people from the turn of the previous century.

As a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, I have been fortunate to spend many days at Anderson House in WAshington DC, The Society has maintained and restored much of the fabric of the decor (and important things like heat and light) since receiving this generous gift in the 1930s. I have often enjoyed breakfast in the :winter garden" pictured on the front cover. Our generation never knew the Andersons except for myth and fable. So it was a real treat to read Skip Moskey's fine biography. It brings the house to life with all the personal details so carefully researched. Much of the book covers also their elegant hilltop mansion in Brookline, MA which is no longer there. Their automobiles survive in the Auto museum in the magnificent barn on the property which was left to the Town of Brookline.Bringing here characters to life is a wonderful story and a good read, besides. Lars was a figure of his age and Moskey brings that age to life with color and flair.

Well researched and written, Moskey's book provides a fascinatingdetailed look at the life and times of the Andersons. A most enjoyableread, and a must for the present occupants of their former home inWashington, DC, which Isabel gave to the Society of the Cincinnati.

The story of Larz and Isabel Anderson is interwoven with the history of the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Gilded Age wealth, high-flying style, social-class attitudes and leisurely occupations are displayed with a mastery of detail in this first biography of the power couple of their time. Skip Moskey shows off his fabulous research skills in depicting the Andersons' lives through their expenses and consumption, from dinner parties they held at their Washington mansion to trips taken aboard their houseboat, the Roxana, and above all, the houses they built in Washington, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He draws the difference in character between free-spending Larz and frugal Isabel, whose down-to-earth and practical side did not fit so easily with her inherited wealth. But he also shows a couple whose relationship was framed in love and respect, and how that was expressed in their social context. This book is interesting social history. I would have liked to have seen more of a narrative, a theme, or a guiding reason to care about the Andersons, but I am happy to have met them!

The bio of Larz and Isabel Anderson is slightly odd in its arrangement, not entirely chronological but understandable given the areas in their lives to be discussed. It's generally well-written.I have visited "Weld" - the Larz Anderson Transportation Museum - a number of times as part of a motorcycle gathering on the premises. As an architectural historian and garden lover, I was fascinated by the grounds and the Wheelwright carriage house and automobile buildings, stunning examples of his style. The garden's remains were sad to see, however.The book is badly lacking illustrations of the garden, especially since it spends so much time describing them. This could have been remedied easily from the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian Institution ( lovely photos in color and b/w of "Weld"). Also, the Larz Anderson Transportation Museum owns an extensive photo archive of the gardens. One must therefore purchase the Arcadia Images Of America "Larz Anderson Park" in order to satisfy any interest in what the garden looked like during its prime. There are also images of their vehicles in that volume. If the reader is interested in the gardens, they may access the Archives of American Gardens on the Smithsonian's website and buy or borrow the Larz Anderson Park book to balance the lack of appropriate illustrations in the Moskey book.

But eventually the young rabbit's coat gets thicker and the apple tree loses its leaves. Bunny is worried and he asks, "Are you sick?" More changes are in the air, too. The bunny thinks, "The beautiful earth must be dying." A woodpecker and an owl try to reassure the bunny, and so does the plant life that looks withered or gone. For example, the lost flowers croon a message of hope. They try and let the bunny know they aren't gone forever. Eventually, he snuggles into the burrow with his parents. When he wakes up, the world is alive again. The story ends with a paraphrased quote from theologian Martin Luther, "God has written the promise of new life not just in books alone but in every leaf in springtime." McPhail captures the beauty of the seasons in vibrant greens, yellows, and other colors. His paintings set the lovely tone of the story. Most of the images of the little bunny are realistically drawn, yet he conveys emotion that a child can glean. For example, his facial expressions show his joy in spring and confusion in fall. A charming baby bunny experiences seasonal changes in his environment throughout his first year of life in this emotion-filled story from the author of The Jesus Storybook Bible (2007). In lyrical, soothing prose, the text follows the brown bunny through the four seasons, noting his observations of the changes in nature. The bunny is concerned by the changes he sees in the fall and by the seemingly dead appearance of trees, grass and flowers in winter. His parents and other animals reassure the bunny about the cycle of rebirth, and the bunny celebrates his springtime birthday with joy. Although the story can be interpreted as a Christian parable, there is no overt religious content until the final page, which includes a paraphrased quotation from Martin Luther about God's promise of new life being revealed in springtime as well as in books, presumably the Bible. (The actual quotation is not included.) Due to the mostly secular appearance of the story, this odd placement means the book is likely to be overlooked by readers looking for religious approaches to springtime stories. Delicate watercolor illustrations in McPhail's distinctive style are filled with delightful details and varied seasonal perspectives, as well as appealing rabbits and other creatures. The concluding quotation and the subtext of rebirth make this an oh-so-subtle Easter title that readers may well miss. I normally love Sally Lloyd-Jones (the Jesus Storybook Bible is fabulous), but this was just not a favorite. I got it to read to our little group at church, ages 4-7, and it just didn't have enough story to it to hold their attention. Maybe it would be good if you were one-on-one reading at bedtime, when you could snuggle, discuss each picture in depth, and talk about what's going on more.....but for our group it didn't work. Nice pictures.

Sweet book narrated from by the bunny. As he looks at the world around him and how it changes.

These books by Sally Lloyd-Jones remind you what it was like to be a child and hear a really good story. This one is especially great.
